8'x4'x2' DIY Plywood - Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wont be able to. I could get it in the door, but not onto the shelf.

How should I go about re inforcing the end that will not be touching anything?

Thanks again - you have been uber helpful, when I start building this, Ill take pics on every step and desribe it so that I might be able to quote you guys and make a sticky for people in my same shoes, wanting to do this, but lacking the know how.

Sweet. We were already thinking of making a 2"x2" trim around the inside to put the eurobracing on (assuming euro bracing will be necessary for this build)

We also were planing on using similar wood on the outside for support, so I guess we should be okay.

What about the glass? Will silicone on the maxACR hold it? We were thinking maybe to make a lip at the bottom of where the glass was to hold it up.

Also, do you have any idea what sort of coverage you get from max acr? Found the link, but they dont tell you what sort of coverage.

I used 4x 1.5 gallon kits to cover my tank with about 4 coats as well as to wet in the layer of fiberglass.

I don't have my notes anymore but I think when I spoke with Gerald there he had said the coverage was about the same as Pond Armor. About 50-60 Sq feet @ 10mil per quart. Obviously Max is much thinner and will need to be applied in several coats to get to 10mil where as Pond Armor can be applied in a single coat due to it's thickness.

What thickness would you suggest?

Again, thanks for all your help. I found a way to shuffle space around in the classroom, so the 8x4' will be back on, but we are going to build this smaller one first to get some of the basics down.

Right now we are planning 3x 150g's (This tank), 1x 480g, 1x 330g (ish) So we really like these ideas. Hopefully your guys help will leave the university and students with a great resource for years to come. Thanks again.

Breaking ground next week on the 8'x4'x2' - or at least my boss says so.

Hopefully Ill have pictures soon!

Go with Dow 795 for setting your windows. It's designed for glazing and is what a lot of zoos and aquariums use. It doesn't have the nasty acetic acid cure that 100% silicone does. Very nice stuff to work with.

Barn & Fence paint is good for the outside to provide moisture and mildew resistance.

Glad you're back on with the 8'x4'x2' build. My best advice is to stick with dimensional lumber standard lengths when building tanks i.e. 8', 10', 12', 14', etc. It lessens the cuts you have to make.

Well eventually we want to build more...but I convinced him to start here...and rearranged the entire fish teaching collection. Which is a lot of fish in jars. But now we have the space.

So I can sand down the edges after applying the pond coat...and then line with Dow 795 to put the windows in?
