Oh the frustrations of saltwater

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if it makes you feel any better I could not keep snails alive either. I finally gave up and went with all crabs. "emerald craps" are very cool. might be my favorite to watch in the tank atm.

Really? So there might not be anything wromg with my tank

What about stray voltage? I heard snails are very sensitive to that. How do I check for it?

There have been 3 Turbo snails and 3 Nassarius snails. I had a diatom bloom and the cycle was over so I bought them to clean it up. They did a good job to the front and sides but the back of the tank still looks like crap. They didnt even touch it. I dont really care if I cant keep snails, it just makes me worry that the other things that I have in there are going to die. The temp of the tank is 76 degrees. I want to get a nem and clowns for it but I dont want them to die either. Its making me angry. I never had this problem with my 75gal reef.

Your using the wrong snails for the food source - Nerite, Cerith, and Margerita snails eat diatoms. Another thing to consider is small hermits killing them to upgrade their shells. Good example - when I bought my red legs they were lil' dinky things now some are so large they live in turbo snail shells.

Okay, maybe ill grab one or two of those this weekend and see how they do

I think your mistaking my nitrate for nitrite. I have 0 nitrIte but I only have 5ppm of nitrAte. 5ppm of nitrAte is acceptable. Amounts of nitrAte are acceptable up to 20ppm or so for FOWLR. I doubt the little bit of nitrate is the problem. I now have a cleaner shrimp, lawnmower blenny, 2 blue damsels, 1 yellowtail damsel and 2 four stripe damsels in the tank and they are doing just fine. Might try a snail again sometime soon.

do your crabs have extra shells lying around for them to grow into? Alot of times they will kill snails if they need a new shell, so its best to always have shells around. Also the larger mexican turbos are not in season right now and they will 80% of the time die once you acclimate them because they are found further down in cold water and cannot acclimate to warmer water. Snails are also extremely sensitive to salinity. If your running your tank at .021 and the lfs is at .024-26 that could be a problem which it kind of sounds like by them not coming out of their shell after you put them in.
