Cheapest and best canister filter for a 300 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't recommend an xp4 to anyone. I gave mine away. It's not even rated for a tank that large.

I'd go with 2 fx5s with that bioload.

Ive had no luck w/ fluval. And i wouldnt use 1 fx5 on a 400 lol try 3. I have a xp4 ac110 and 9wattuvc on my 90 gallon. I like my rena better but i dont soley relay on it for filtration, only bio filtration.

Glad it works for you

I agree with the xp4 and ac110 combo. They are great together. The ac110 polishes very well and the xp has great bio load capability. I like fx5, and I also like eheim 2080. But the eheim is a little spendy. If I was you, with that bioload, I would really go for a sump though, and probably a tank larger then a 125. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm not a big fluval guy either. I don't think you can suggest you'd need 3 fx5s unless you said the same about the xp4 to be fair. I guess apparently for that tank you'd need 3 fx5s. I'm not sure how many xp4s you'd need then. All filters tank rating is exaggerated.

An fx5 is rated for a 400 gallon aquarium. You say you need 3 which by their rating would be enough for a 1200 gallon aquarium. A rena xp4 is rated for a 265 gallon aquarium. By your measure if we're going on the 1200 gallon manufacturing rating for a 300 gallon. You would need 4.5 xp4s. I guess you could go with 4 xp4s and an xp3. I know everyone is biased on their filter of choice. Either 2 fx5s or 2 xp4s might work. I had an fx5 and an xp4 on a heavily stocked 210 gallon aquarium and it wasn't enough. The fx5 I'm still using on a 180 gallon and have never had an issue. The xp4 had trouble getting air in the filter and water in the pump head. I checked to make sure I had the hoses done properly. I replaced all the O rings and lubricated the ones that needed it. I still had the issues, so I gave it away.

It could be specifically the one I had was defective. The person I gave it to has had no luck getting it to work properly. I have an xp3 that works fine though.

Yea i didnt mean it like that. I just meant an fx5 isnt a cure all for a 150+ tank and neither is an xp4. It also depends on what media ur using and how clean u keep it. Honestly my 1000gph barely works for my 5 4-6" rbp so it really depends on stock too. I end up vacing 2x per week!

No canister is going to lesson the need for regular maintanence and water changes

Yeah unfortunately they don't make a canister realistically capable of filtering big tanks. The eheim 2262 is rated for a 500 gallon aquarium and with the flow rate they run there's no way you could filter an aquarium that large.

I actually prefer using sumps now. There's way more options when you use a sump. I know not everyone is a fan of sumps either though.

The way they price canisters I don't think cheapest and best really go together. Really for the money those aquatop/sunsun filters are pretty decent.

id add a fx5 or xp4 or some other larger cannister. At the least. I agree you could prolly get two large sun sun filters for the price of a fx5. I also love ac110s and use those with cannisters on many of my tanks

I'm going to change my vote..Ehiem 2180!!! Just spend the money on something that will last bro. Good luck.
