Never take a local pet stores word about anything with out looking up and doing your reserch online and other peoples experiences. LPS will just tell you what you wanna hear, Right or wrong they just want to make the sale and make money. Do your reserch online, you can fine almost anything your looking for and look up maltible pages. People like us MFK are witch do this for the love of the hobby and arnt trying to make money or a sale to new commers. Do as much reserch as you can about what your planning on getting anything, know your fish in and out!

I have to agree completely. Even the specialty shops have ppl just wanting to make a sale. I asked one about live planted setups Ans he looked at me like I had asked it in a foreign language. Thank you MFK's for all your help and insight.

Yea man the longer lfs house the fish the more $$$$$ and space they lose!!

They dont care if a fish dies....

There are some good knowledgable employes at some stores tho

I looked at live plants at petsmart and a dude asked to help and I said no I didnt want snails in my tank. he told me the snails they had in the tank couldnt mate. He took one plant you and i looked at it, it looked like some one picked ther nose with it there was so much snail eggs on it. Screw them!
 
One lfs in my area literally hires high school kids for cheap labor, if you ask them a question they go "uuuhhhhhhh", makes you womnder hy people even shop there. Luckily for me theres two other lfs in my area, ima that not all theemployees are much help. At least at big als they only hire people with actualy knowledge of the hobby and are all hobbyists themselves.
 
I dont think its very fair to say NEVER take an employees advice. I know quite a few lfs workers (myself included) that give good, knowledgable information and genuinely want to help people with their fish and tanks.
I will agree, however, that everybody should do as much research as they can before they decide to purchase something. But talking to a lfs employee is not going to hurt.
 
my lps is pretty good, whenever someone picks up goldfish as live food they say that it is very unhealthy and that goldfish are fatty,carry a bad enzime and that they should pick up feeder rosy barbs
instead, the only mess up i saw was their clown loaches had a mild case of white spot so i pointed it out and they immediately moved the loaches into a quarantine tank. they DO carry other animals as well, it's
not exclusively a fish store, i got my budgie from there as well.

you live near melbourne too? how come there's an RTC in ur avatar? i thought rtcs were illegal here in australia?
 
Are you guys saying that the 4 Pacu we bought at PetSmart will not stay small because they live in a 20G?

lol, almost made this mistake. but my petsmart has some at least half decent people that want to help and dont really go for the sale, actually have heard them say it wasnt a good idea to combine certain fish to another customer. some people treat it like a job, others seems to want to learn. so their not all bad
