770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad to hear that things are looking up, but sad to hear you lost one of your balas. I hope that clown loach heals up.

How has the Laguna pump been treating you? Where do you have it installed? Just asking because I got one and they seem not bad.
Did you ever see what the power usage of it was? Looked though allot of your posts for like the tenth time and didn't see it right away. It's good reading I enjoy it. Lol

Man, another one of the Redfin Balas has a gouge on his nose (in basically the exact location as the other one that died). I'm pretty sure it's the Wide Bars that are causing the problems. The Wide Bars are like a pack of Pirahnas. I had no idea they would be so aggressive. The Red Hook Silver Dollars I had in my old 270 would only fight with one another...they seemed to be scared of all other fish in the tank, but these Wide Bars are aggro. Maybe when I add the Texas Cichlid and the Albino Oscar, they will put the Wide Bars in check? I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose this Redfin Bala too, which really sucks. I was trying to set up a community tank so that I would not have to deal with crazy aggression issues! :nilly:

The Laguna is awesome. I love that I don't have to worry about a seal going bad on it. I am running it submerged in my sump. I have it laid on it's side and I am actually using the bulkhead that I was using for the intake for my Reeflo pump...so it goes out the side of the sump and up the back of the tank to my returns. I've been meaning to take some pictures of the new plumbing so I'll do that soon.

I just checked the power consumption and at 9' head pressure, I am getting around 2,000GPH, drawing 155 watts...and it runs quietly, especially considering how much water it moves. I have a backup that I thought about running to increase flow, but with the one 4200 and the air stones, I have plenty of water movement.

What model did you get? The 4200 comes with either a small strainer or you can keep it in the big basket/cage. I think all the other models don't include the smaller strainer that fit over the intake...so I would keep it in the cage to avoid anything getting sucked into the impellar. You are going to like it...it's a solid pump.

ya mine has a strainer on it which is nice, I plan to place mine in the middle of the sump and then have the inlets with filter socks on the left and right sides with lots of filter bags with media on either side of the pump and bio balls all over in all the other area, mine in the older model the laguna 2150 which is like the 2400 that they sell now, made to filter a 4300 gallon pond.

I heard rumors that widebar silver dollars were going to be reclassified from Myleus Schomburgkii to something in the Colossoma genus due to having more in common with the Pacu than silver dollars. I don't know if this is true or not, but based on size, behavior, and looks, it does make sense.

My school of thinbar Myleus Schomburgkii are very different than the widebars; they are pretty docile and don't even fight among themselves that much.

Very cool- sounds like a solid plan. You'll have to post pix once you get it setup.

That makes sense to me too. These things are mini-pacu in appearance and in attitude. I'm not exaggerating when I say that they have almost doubled in weight since I bought them and I'd guess they've grown about 3/4" (in only 2 weeks!). The warm temps are probably contributing to the crazy growth rate, but I am also feeding them pretty heavily...I'm trying to keep their bellies full so they leave everyone else alone. Hopefully when I drop the temps back down to normal they will chill out a bit.

I'm not so sure that the Widebars were to blame for the Redfin Balas deaths. I just lost two more today ...I don't think they can handle the high temps or perhaps it's the salt that they don't tolerate well. After looking closer at them, what appeared to be a wound was actually just whitening of the tissue...no gouge at all, no missing flesh...it actually looked more like a puffy white bruise. In any case, all signs of Ich are gone, so I'm going to drop the temps down to 85 and keep them there for another week just to make sure all Ich is gone, then I'll do a big water change to dilute the salt and bring the temp down one degree per day until I get down to 80. As I mentioned before, I am quarantining everything from now on...not taking any chances. I can't wait until the tank is stable and I can enjoy watching them all grow out.

I got rid of all the goldfish today- donation to the LFS. The tank looks empty now, but once everyone grows out I think it will fill out nicely.

I didn't leave the store empty handed though...I brought home five 4" clown loaches, which takes my pack up to 10.

Video of my 70G growout/quarantine tank. I have a Texas Cichlid, a Petsmart Red Texas, Albino Oscar, Green Terror and 6 Clown Loaches (all the loaches are hiding in the pipe):

Good selection of fish. Green terror is one of my all time favorites.

Man thats beauty! Cant say i like the choise in fish lol, but whatever floats your boat. Thats a killer tank either way.

If it was mine, id cover the entire bottom with boulders/rocks/pebbles etc, it would look amazing with that amount of height on the tank imo
