IMO, No Bichir is really rare anymore. Only certain variant of Bichirs are rare. For example, Polypterus Bichir Bichir "Turkana" is rare or Polypterus Senegalus "Turkana" is also rare. Meanwhile Polypterus Bichir Bichir "Chad" is readily available now. Get what I'm trying to say?
 
North America its pretty much if Toyin doesn't have it you can't get it. Unless its from a private seller. I've been trying for a year and half to get a true retropinnis no luck. Same with Weeksii and Palmas Palmas. Many many LFS have called their distributor for me to get a list of what they can get or have available and its always the same no matter when I ask, sens, ornate, albino sens, rope, del, endli. Sometimes a retro shows up buts its always a palmas polli. In searching for Polypterus over the last 3 years I've only seen 2 lapradei in a store and one distributor just happened to have 1 ansorgii hybrid. I've talked to several LFS owners across Ohio and they said they don't like to keep bichirs except for sens cause they are just too expensive and hard to get.

Wouldnt make too much money probably, bichirs are a specialty fish. Plus you'd have to compete with toyin
 
In europe its like this; common :
Senegalus, Ropefish
Less common: Albinos, Ornate
Rarely available : Lap, Endli, Teugelsi, Palmas Polli, Buttikoferi
Almost never available: Bichir bichir ( I've only heard of one import) Mokelembembe, Retros, Weeksi
 
I cannot believe none of you guys mention platinum bichir. They are the rarest in my opinion

Where I'm at.

Common - sens
Less common - albino sens, ornates.
Uncommon/rare - everything else
that is all I have seen in the local pet stores. a two or three inch ornate will run ya 50 so I have never asked what it would cost to have anything else ordered for me.
