I know how you feel on the growth. They seem to grow slow when you stare at them constantly on a daily basis. lol Believe me that little guy will be big soon. Just give him/her a good diet and keep up with the water changes.

What size tank are the dovii in, how big are they? Tryin to establish pairs and successful spawns can take some skill but mist importantly, patients:) some fish will bond out for life, some just hate each other and will never bond. And others will play the love hate thing lol. I don't usually have that much trouble pairing out dovii. With them its one way or the other. But since they've spawned already a few times, I would have left the divider out. Dovii can be really rough on each other and at times during the courtship I've thoughy about putting the divider back in. But it really depends on the fishes behavior with each other. I really can't explain fish psychology lol that's where you learn by trial and error and take risks.

Dovii are cheap and grow fast so you could always get another female if something happened. And if theyre a young pair, it could take them a few spawns before they get it right. If your female is relatively smaller than the male, then make her some sort of cave on her side of the divider that she can get comfortable with. Then when you see her going thru divider to start to spawn, pull the divider and see what happens. It may look rough bit try to give them at least an hour together before putting divider back if needed. If that doesn't work and your male is a killer then all I can say is keep.the divider and accept that's how its gonna be because of their temperment. Or sell them and try again... But good luck either way, I'm sure you will figure it out:)

No joke, usually the largest ones are males. It's not hard, I'm not 100% right all the time but I can tell you I am 75% right most of the time lol.
Yeah and umbee's are easily the hardest to sex, I don't think I know anybody who can sex an umbee at 1 inches!!

lol wut. where did u learn that, encarta 2002?

Ya i hear what your sayin fp, love hate relationship lol thats what they have. Before the last spawn they were together all the time i had a cave that she can only go in, and they started to court very aggressivly wich they never did that rough previously, this went on for about 2 weeks then she stayed in her cave for abought a week lol and didnt come out. I moved some rocks she got scared and ran over to him and boom 2 days later there was eggs lol. Right now i have a divder with two holes that she can only fit through so she stays in there right now, I will give them another spawn and see what happens. Thanks for your info i also have to work on my patiance lol.

Mirror test. Put a mirror up against the tank. When female umbee goes up to it there dorsal will go black. Male dorsal wont.

I tried it all 9 umbee pectorals go kinda dark but not there dorsal. One goes up to the mirror flars its gills and its head goes black, it will not let any other umbee go up to the mirror chase all of them away, he or she is very dominant and also the biggest. But i do not get any of the tell tale signs that people say they get.

What I stated earlier is that the mirror thing is very unreliable. I never use it. The best method is to monitor your fishes behavior. Once they hit 3" grab a suspected male and female and put them in theyre own tank divided. Within a couple of weeks you should see them show signs of sexual interest and will be able to distinguish them easier. And possibly obtaining a pair. If not that at least use a known male or female on one side and rotate the rest out on other side of the divider to determine the rest. The mirror trick might work once in a while but what it lacks are pherimones, and communication between eachother that live interaction can achieve.

I just used the mirror test on my female to see if it works and to my surprise it does... she was rather dull because she's currently separated from the male but she went into the yellow breeding dress as soon as the mirror was put up, her dorsal fin and eyes became black too.

I didn't try it on the male cuz he's becoming a psycho glass banger... the other day I put my face close to the glass and he hit it so hard that I thought he was dead lol
