I got this fellow at Petsmart last week (he was sold as a Red Texas, but I didn't think he was a flowerhorn or a real Red, but he cost the same as the Green Texas', of which they were out, so I got him anyway.... he *IS* a Green Texas, isn't he?). I had him shortly with a firemouth and a severum, of similar size, but he kept them hiding 99% and I'd only seen him once a day, if at all. Now that I was able to pick up a 55gal for a growout for some cichlids to mix with my oscar (a future 150, and only the ones that get along passably), I left him alone in a growout 40gal breeder. He's let me see him MUCH MORE (plus, the firemouth and severum are much braver in their other tank too!), but he's still a bit shy. I hope this will pass? I tried to give him several hiding spots, but I wonder, does he need some kind of dither fish? If there is something he can get along with, just until he gets close to being too big for this tank? I plan to leave the other fish(plural?) in this tank when he vacates to a 60 or a 75, so hopefully something that can keep the 40 as a permanent home? And how long is it safe (to prevent stunting) to keep him in the 40? As of now, he has a HOB filter rated for 50gal, and a sponge filter that's for a 20 or so, I forgot the exact specs. Twice monthly water changes of about 60-70%, or at least it's how I kept the goldies that were in here until I moved them to a pond. I figure it's an OK schedule? Any other advice? I can only find a little info on these fellows online, so I'd appreciate all I can get!

He looks good, I'd say he can be safe from stunting in that tank until he's about 5", then I'd move him up for sure.

In regards to your water change schedule, I'd do 40-50% changes weekly as opposed to twice a month. This will help him to be more active and to grow faster as well. Feed him quality food and give him good water and he should grow nicely.

In terms of dither fish, you can certainly do some giant danios (although my carpintis hunted them at night a while back) or tiger barbs.

That's not a Carpintis/ Green Texas
Looks more like a KML Flowerhorn

That's what I was thinking. I saw one up at the Petsmart by me, unfortunately the guy that works the fish department knew... or I would have snagged it up for 6-7 bucks lol.

Looks like it should be a nice one OP... but it's definitely not a Carpinte.

If that's what it was labeled as, that's what I would've demanded to pay. ;)

He knew it was a Flowerhorn... it was in a separate tank with no price. So, that was his call. Now had it been one of the less experienced people I could have pulled it off.

Oh crudders. I'm not a big fan on the looks of flowerhorns BUT he is really pretty, so I will keep him happily :] However, as I never researched this species (hybrid? I've only gathered bits of info here and there), can I get a little help? Lots of info on these guys anywhere? How are my dither ideas affected by this? Can I still keep him in the 40 until he gets to 5inches, and will a 60/75 be enough as an adult? What's the KML stand for? Eeep, I feel so un-ready... and yet, so eager for more info!

KML= Kamalau

Search through the hybrid section, you should find all kinds of info

Care is practically the same as tex, no worries. They can be more aggressive. My female carpentis wich really isnt a green texas its a pearl cichlid but commonly confused is more aggressive than some of my female fh

My Crapentis for reference, the Green Tex doesent have as much pearling
