I like the look of the dark sand. Wondering if anyone has remarked on a colour difference in their Channa with dark vs light substrate?

Thanks :) got it cheap aswell

Funny you saying that because they have gone slightly darker in colour since the substrate change, not sure if this is do do with them aging or what, they definately stand out more though on the darker substrate

Cheap you say? :naughty: What is it?

I'm still debating what substrate to use in my 180 g. Pool filter sand is the right price, but I like the darker colours....may look into blasting sand.

I'm not sure what type it is I got it from Maidenhead Aquatics its not sand like a really fine gravel cost me £15 for 25kg made by a company called unipac best substrate I've used by far!! What are you stocking in the 180??

I'l be setting it up heavily planted for a few months first, and hope to stock pulchra's or similar dwarf Channa. Still finishing off the room in the basement where they'll go. One more coat of paint and 6 electrical outlets to go.....

Sounds good!! do your plants live long? do you use fertiliser to keep them alive and green??

Pulchras are nice!! how many tanks do you have?? would love a basement i could put 4 or 5 tanks in !

Learning more and more about snakeheads every day, have ignored advice on them before thinking i knew better but obviously that went wrong lol for example keep different species together and keeping sub-tropical channa at a slightly high temp :( but hey you only learn from your mistakes.

Just have 3 at the moment, a 180 g, a 75 g, and a 29 g, all sitting empty waiting for the basement finish. Hope to stock pulchra in the 180 and bleheri in the 75. Both subtropical and heavily planted.

I built the fish room with a laundry sink and a dedicated circuit breaker. It's small, but should have room for these 3 and a rack of breeders / a rescue tank for aggression issues. First time I haven't had to negotiate wall space with my wife!

I've been keeping fish for 30 years but am new to snakeheads, so have been reading all I can on these forums. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions once the tanks are up and running.

As for plants, I've kept many of the easy low light varieties over the years but may branch out bit this time around, hence my interest in what others are using for substrate, lighting etc. Looking into budget solutions though , as the cost of specialized substrate alone for the 180 is several hundred dollars. I'll be getting dry ferts and my T5 bulbs from a local hydroponics store to save some $$.
