what time of day is best to go fishing for gar?

I go anytime, the hotter the better, means they have to surface more because there is less oxygen in the water. Early spring they breed and hang out in twos or threes and are easy to spot as well. You ever catch one? Do you know how too?

I've been fishing for them quite a while! mostly I go around noon, the lures just pass by their face and they never chase after it. I ask in the gar forum and Richard, one of the gar researcher told me that I go at the wrong time of day.

Use live bait/cut bait. I use a single hook, with a piece of bluegill on it...toss it right by them and they go to it each time...it may be harder during breeding but they will take it eventually. There is no set time to catch a gar, its all different times of the day, even at night. In the summer/fall I like to use a stickbait, bleeding shad, thing is you got to really give it to them to get a good hook set. Three places on a gar to get a hook set, tip of the nose, throat/corner of mouth of lower jaw...if you really really hit into one hard you can go thru his top jaw but even that is iffy at best. You can use a bobber or deadline or sight fish for them, I do all three depending on the gar, if one doesnt work I do the next and so on.

apparently there is the set of time the catch gar! people around here use that kind of baits all the time and gars are the fish that we see the most but all I get are sunfish, channel cat, drum, and sometime perch! And I'm done with all the hooks as I hook other fish instead of gar, now I'm using a piece of rope as a lure because this is the best way to catch gars and not other fish!

this last weekend we went fishing for catfish and hooked a few but only landed 1 and it was after sunset.
thanks, I think I will try go fishing for them after 7 pm!

The biggest one Ive ever caught or seen in person was a 13lb 6ozer I caught when me and a buddy were trolling in a sectioned out part of a lake in my area thats used for picnics and gas motors prohibited. I must say it was a rather epic fight since I was using 4lb test and a flimsy ultralight glass rod. We hadnt even seen any gar til that day. April 16 it was really cloudy and they were sittin on top. Hooked her right in the corner of the mouth with an inline spinner. Never posted pics so hope it shows up23663_383021364778_648544778_3968708_2475588_n.jpg

I tossed her back after weighin her and the picture. Took somewhere in the 30 min range to tire her out with the setup i had. The rope was safety. Didnt want her floppin out of my hands and catch my face with them teeth and it was removed before she went back in
