Just start bowfishing for them if it's legal in your state. I usually only shoot carp but It is legal to shoot gar I just don't see that many.

that is the most stupid thing I've seen so far! do you know why we don't see Alligator gar that larger than 10 ft anymore?

I didn't say alligator gar? We don't have alligator gar in MN. And maybe you should get a little info before you say something like that. Alligator gar populations are not declining just because if bowfishing? Most of their declining population had to do with hydrological alterations (dams, dikes). I didn't know this thread was just about alligator gar but now I do since I see you're from Texas.

I'm not talking about their population, I'm talking about those gar can live over 100 years but bowfishing for gar make it impossible for any gar to live that long! if you go search for some videos or picture of gator gar bowfishing you will see they kill a lot of gar around 6ft long. A 6ft gator gar is about 25-30 years old and they can live over 100 years and keep growing until they die. It is a possibility that gator gar can grow to 15 ft like in some documents in the 19th century, but most of the young gar is now getting kill by bowfishing so it is nearly impossible for a gar to live that long without get caught!
but any way bow fishing for any gar is not a good Idea!

Isn't that ultimately a population issue? If there were more gar there would be a better possibility for a gar to reach a maximum size. There's more than just bowfishing behind the issue I don't shoot gar I was just saying you could if it was legal.

Trust me. If bowfishing for any species of gar was the sole reason that a population was dying out, it would be outlawed. Every state has an agency that spends hours deciding regulations for sportfishing and hunting. There are several commissions and even the federal fish and wildlife service which monitors these things. If something is legal, it won't drive a native population to extinction anymore.

If you want to talk about death, yes bowfishing is lethal almost 100% of the time, but the hook and line release mortality of several other species of sportfish is very high. Just because you let it go and saw it swim away, doesn't mean it survived. Many fish are so exhausted from a fight that once they're released, they die shortly after. I don't have exact numbers, I don't have the time right now to get citations and do more extensive research, but release mortality of sportfish is a little talked about problem that is bigger than you think. It's why there is a huge push toward using circle hooks for many species.

If you want to attempt catch and release, hook and line is the best way. If you want to catch and consume, bowfishing is a fun and legal way to do that as well. Just because you don't like to do it, doesn't make it wrong or anyone on here stupid.

Bow fishing for gar actually did have an large impact on the gator gar. At one time there was no limit for years apparently, now its a 1 fish per day limit. Its a lot easier to shoot a gar with a bow than it is to kill them. Everything comes into play with their declining numbers, but the bow fishing was a major contributor. Whenever you see a gator in the news, like a 250lb one or any large gator, 99%-100% of the time, its a bow kill. Then you have to wonder about all the gators being killed off the air with nobody reporting anything and many other factors.
