Alright, I officially think these fish suck.
Had one jump and a couple months later the second one jammed himself behind the FX5 intake upside down and croaked.
Granted these are only 6" fish and are very skittish but I also have a friend who had one die because it rammed the side of the tank when the light came on.

So I don't know at what size they stabilize and can start to deal with water changes and normal maintenance but at 150/each they are quite the gamble.

And FYI, I was told by someone that FISH had a 12" one for sale a while back for $700 and the sales person allowed it to jump during the transfer and the fish died within 20 minutes.

Crazy, eh?
(death pic to follow)

Sorry for your lost, and yes they are very, very fragile fish. It's funny how the Armatus and GAFT are some of the largest fish loaded with some serious hardware in their mouth, yet they are some of the most skiddish fish ever, even at larger sizes. WEIRD..:screwy:
....and their cousin Dorado.I had a young one jump out and hit the floor and it was dead within the hour.Every armatus I have had would just up and stop eating for a few weeks if I moved them to another tank.

This is why I will never get one, just too big a gamble :(

Very true.

I think to raise one without any issues you would need the following:

Automatic light timer that turned on your lights via a dimmer that gradually turned on and off.
A water change system that change 20% daily of pre-treated, heated, de-chlorinated water.
A steady supply of giant danio or other medium sized schooling fish for them to hide alongside and feed on.
Some aquascape that they could use to hide but could never be trapped by.

And of course always approach the tank slowly and don't make any sudden movements. ;)

Maybe the two I had were just extra skittish.
If they were $30-$50 it would be worth the risk.

Oh well,
Lesson learned x2
