I will be getting a bigger tank as soon as humanly possible, and this time I want to have a specific plan in mind concerning stock/decor. I find its easier to create a unique niche/biotope/concept tank if you plan it out from the start.

Since my little tank is already badly overstocked, and my craving for fish-keeping is nowhere near sated, I have been quenching my obsession by working out what I want to do next. I just graduated from college in December, and I will probably want to wait until I'm ready to move out into my own place before I get a bigger tank that would be hell to move, because it seems my parents are not very enthused about my rediscovered hobby. That means it will probably be a couple months before my plans can be enacted, unless I cave and buy another tank before moving.

Anyways, I am thinking that as soon as I can I will get a 29 gallon tank, or if I can fit it, a 40 breeder. Im going to try making the sand pit of sudden doom, which i have mentioned before. I want a sand substrate with no decorations/plants except for along the sides/rear of the tank.

For stock, I want to get a few chacas chacas and a few prehistoric monster fish, if I can find them. I think this combination of fish would make for a really awesome oddball tank. Does anybody foresee problems with this combination? What size tank would be suitable? I would probably put a couple mid-upper dwelling fish or the sake of the tank's activity level, but the focus would be on my lurkers. What do you guys think?

What new sort of fishy madness are you guys scheming?

indoor or outdoor gar pond also a fw stingray facility in alabama is in the works too. always dreamed of opening a fw stingray breeding facility

OP...I assume by a tank that "will be hell to move" you mean something bigger than a 29 or 40. If not, there are no "ancient monsters" that I would recommend for a 29 or a 40. Sure, you could put them in there when they are very small but they grow fast. I think if you really want big fish I would wait until you can house them properly. It would be better for the fish and you would probably be happier in the long run.

As for you thread title...I'm in the same boat as you only with a 360g tank. I have it but dont have it set up yet. I'm not in love with the dimensions. I may keep it or sell it and build another one with better dimensions and maybe even more water. I don't even know what I'm going to stock it with yet. But I agree...it is fun to think about and plan.

im gona wait till i move out of my parents into my own house to get a new tank, then im gona build a 8x4x6 1400 gallon tank.

or a 16'x4'x4' river tank.

I think you misunderstood me. I am talking about thalassophryne amazonica, common name "prehistoric monster fish."

Max length is around 6" and they are extremely sedentary. I would not feel bad about housing those in a 29g.
