Just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
x2. remove it now and make it easier on yourself. :D

stability is key to salt tanks. might as well start out as simple and stable as possible :D

Ok so I'll be starting the shrimp cycle tonight.

And I should definitely remove the HOB and just use the rock and power head?

Sorry if I'm sounding dumb I'm just trying to get it right the first time.

Yes the rock and powered are plenty for your tank. You aren't sounding dumb. It's good to ask questions and who better to ask than people who have done all of this before. You don't learn unless you ask.

Well thanks a lot guys. Here's a quick picture just to show you before I remove the filter and throw the shrimp in. Front glass is a little dirty but oh well.

The other question I had was stock. I know to add fish slowly and it looks like 15 days in between adding fish is a good rule, I'm just looking for the final stock of this tank. I definitely want a pair of clowns, is that all I can do in a 20 gallon? Should I do something other then that all together? Do I need inverts?

The only other fish I was looking at to go in was a yellow watchman goby, but if it's too much I'm not worried about it.

A pair of clowns and a goby would be fine in there. I would also put a couple Blue Leg Hermit crabs in there for a CuC. I have 10 in my 40gal reef so maybe put 4 or 5 in. You could also put a cleaner shrimp in once the tank is more established and you have algae for him to eat. The tank looks good so far. I hope you enjoy the wonderful world of SW! It can be frustrating at time but the end result is well worth it.

Ok well that was my ultimate goal to have and I'm glad I can have it. Two clowns, one goby and some random inverts.

I really am enjoying salt a lot actually, actually thinking of getting rid of my fresh just to go bigger with salt. But, I'll see how this tank works out first.

CuC stands for Clean up Crew. Its the inverts/crabs/cephelopods that clean the tank of algae/detrius. Its much easier to start small with SW than to go huge right away. Get the tank up and running for a while and then upgrade. That way you have an understanding of what happens with saltwater aquariums. They always say FW is a box that holds water... SW is an ecosystem. Its true.

That's definitely the truth and very easy to tell once you start going salt. Rather then a cleaner shrimp, I've been looking at an emerald crab for algae cleanup, would you recommend them or no?

An emerald crab would work just fine. They cost about 7 to 9 dollars at your LFS. I actually have 2 of them.
