Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure how much he is suffering, he swims around and is eating. Acting the he was before he lost his tail. I would hate to put him down without giving him a chance.

He'll never recover to be the same as he was previously, but he will eventually require much of what he lost, if you give him the proper medication. But again even then you'll see that he'll be deformed. He is alive though, and so you have the choice now to let him live or otherwise. Who knows he could make quite a recovery, or just get worse and worse and start suffering (more).

Any recommendations on medications? I'm using API brand Melafix and put some salt in the tank.

Maybe 1gal of stress coat? Lol

Personally i would have felt way to bad for the little guy and ended it for him. Bad quality of life = stress!

Wish you luck and he will heal much faster with lower nitrates!

IMO his caudal peduncle may heal over, but the missing caudal peduncle and fin will not grow back. I've had this happen to both Laetacara dorsigera and Archocentrus multispinosus, and neither grew back their actual caudal fins. The fish will end up with a stump. I ended up euthanizing my rainbow cichlid, but I let the dorsigera heal up and she never really had an easy time after that. She struggled to swim and I couldn't keep her with tankmates because she had a hard time competing for food.

If hes eating and swimming just like he was before he got attacked, try and save him. bring the temp up on the tank and add melafix for 7 days. My oscar got attacked by my small red devil and has fully recovered. Just dont put him back in the tank with the others and try to keep the tank hes in as stress free as possible.

So I realized in the new tank the water filter caused a current and pushed the Oscar to one area. I have turned the filter off and put in a small air stone. Is this ok or do I really need the filter. With only the air stone the Oscar moves around much easier.
