I had one clown loach who has been fine for 2 months since I bought him. I read they needed friends so I bought him 2 friends last weekend. They seemed fine too. This morning they were good, the water is clean the nitrates are low. I think I made a mistake by putting in too much food at one time, because in a period of 1/2 hr the water clouded and they all 3 died. I do not know what else to attribute it to, even though I have always put a lot of food in and it always disappears without issue, today was different. Anyone have any ideas?

Clown loachs are one of the fish that are sensative to changes in the tank. That is why its better to keep them in a larger tank because it doeant fluctuate as fast as smaller tanks. I had one die in my 75 today after doing a water change...it happens for no reason sometimes or the city had something in the water.

Hello; You may well be on the right track. While the excess food food may not be visible after a while, it does not disappear. The uneaten portions wind up somewhere in the tank and will eventually decay. Perhaps in the filter medium. perhaps in the substrate. It may be that the regular overfeeding over time reached a critical point with the additional bioload of the new fish? Over feeding will generate decay products which can "sour" the water and the activity of the decay organisms can use up much of the available oxygen. One of the reasons I keep snails and live plants in a tank is to help deal with this sort of thing. I also like to run a substantal amount of bubblers. I also try to avoid excess feeding and skip a day or two each week with no feeding at all. A sour tank will likely have an odor to it.
