Got a catfish w/some feeders... NEED ID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
TSN it is. Looks like a typical TSN any LFS (in US) has. I wouldn't vouch for a precise ID - IMO and IME it is a controversial subject that involves experts arguing. It may be even a hybrid. May become clearer when he puts on a foot or two. Take good care of him - he is in a rough shape. Thin. Beat up. Very small.

That's awesome to get a shovelnose in with the feeders! Your so lucky, I want of those...although I did get a baby managuense in with feeders one time ;-)

I agree about his condition, not surprising considering he was in with a few hundred goldfish getting the "feeder fish" treatment until I ended up with him. I am offering him flakes, bloodworms, small bits of raw shrimp, and I have a dozen guppies that I dropped in there. Trying to give him a lot of options. He doesn't seem to move around much during the day at all, but he is always in a new spot in the morning, so I assume and hope that he is scavenging/eating at night. I'm thinking about setting up my 10 gal for him for a few weeks instead of leaving him in that 55. Less area to "search" for the food? I dunno, this is my first catfish and I just want to get him past this initial hump to a point that he's recovered and then I can get a regular regimen set for him.

If you havent found it all ready you might want to read up some in my sig. The 2 warning I would like to give is A. they spook easy. B. they grow in masive growth sperts of about 3 inches out of no where.

As far as the activity thing Mine is consistantly active around 10 at night and around 10 in the day sometimes

Thanks for the help all... pretty excited about that random bit of luck! Been itching to get into a big catfish, so maybe it's fate that this little guy ended up in with the feeders. I have an extra 55 that I'll set up for him, that should last a few months, as you can see he is only at about 1.5" or so now. Then I'll move him into my 125 or 180 or I'll just get it over with and build something that will house him permanently, also been itching to try and build a plywood tank after I had success building a stand for my 180.

I think he'll probably end up in with my florida gar when it's all said and done. I know each fish is different, but they should be generally compatible right?

generally speaking, keeping with a gar should be fine. I have an RTC and 4 pacu with 2 florida gars. all get a long pretty well.

So just to update things... I set up a little 10 gal for him (very temporary). And a good sign, I watched him eat some a chunk of shrimp today and his activity has increased quite a bit. Couple of pics in his new digs:
