Controlling Green Water Caused By Algae?

Chris, they're not the best UVs you can buy but aquatraders.com has some really cheap ones. I have had three, sold one, and one isn't running, but I have a 36 watt on my 225 right now.

Thanks. Was thinking they are around $100+ but they were $20-40 at Petsmart which is more reasonable. Gonna look into it more before I purchase one.
 
A more long term solution not involving those chemicals would be pothos. I had the exact same problem as you. Tank in direct sunlight in the afternoon, always pea-soup green, until I put a trimming of pothos into a high-flow area (an old HOB filter without media) the roots started growing and nothing seemed to happen for about two weeks, and then one morning I woke up to clear water and mounds of dead algae at the bottom of the tank. Just siphoned it out and now the water is crystal clear. Sometimes gets algae on the glass, but all you need to do is wipe it off manually or use one of those magnetic thingies.
 
So how would I go about adding pothos to a tank and what would I need to do to care for them. I might do those once I get my 125g back.

The stuff did help clear it up. Did a 50% water change to be safe. I need to remove the fake green plants I have near the surface cause the light reflecting off them is still give me a green effect when I take pics.

Go to somewhere they sell houseplants (home improvement store, grocery store, etc), and buy a pot of pothos. Remove from dirt. Wash dirt off. Trim roots with sharp scissors. Plop in tank (roots only, leaves above the water level) and done. Position them so they get natural sunlight and they will really go nuts. I got creative and have wood sticking above my water line and used a plastic zip-tie to attach pothos to it.

Get a UV STERILIZER filter... 48 Hours and bye bye green water... Turn it of when you dont use it.

Empty HOB would be perfect. You don't really need to do anything. You don't even need to plop the roots in water, just make sure one of the root "nodules" is in water, and it will sprout roots and pretty soon start growing like crazy. And like that other person said, just the roots and part of the stem below water. If the leaves go below water they will die and rot.
