Who has their Piranha on pellets?

I agree that the above mentioned varied diet is best.

This is ironic, usually people are trying to get serra's onto pellets but in this case its all he takes.

What is the longest he's starved refusing other foods?
If he's thick and healthy with alot of reserves then I would not feed for a week, then try white fish fillet cut into a 1x1 cubes. Put in a piece and let it sit for ten min, if he does not take it then wait and repeat every couple of days. He will not starve himself.

Exactly, in most cases overfeeding is worse then underfeeding! Fish can go up 1-2 months w/o eating

Atleast hes stuck on pellets and not feeders but in time he will appreciate a varied diet!

What's up w/ the upper case typing? A varied diet is better but Hikari is not a brand that does not know what they are doing is IS NOT bad for them. In fact, of all pellet foods is one of the best out there. So what if he won't take raw foods? What proof can you present that your fish is in overall better health than one on pellets? Assumptions are being fed as facts here when there is no evidence or even studies to prove so. Protein blah blah blah, show me a study that proves a fish has better growth on a raw diet rather than a pellet diet and prove to me that it is not just the individual genes of the fish, then upper case type all you want.

Overall, why not just suggest instead of force feed your method of raising? The method posted here is not mistreatment or abuse so tone it down. Bashing on pellet feeding...... what's next?

Very good suggestions. I always went with frozen foods. I never tried pellets, but I heard that it takes a while to get them on it. Good luck!

Did I miss something? Who is bashing pellet feeding?

I am a strong believer that a varied diet is best, and part of the diet I feed is indeed Hikari food sticks as a staple.
As for proof that variety is best well, there may not be any written scientific data on the subject but if you use common sense it is quite obvious that variety is always better. ie; all things in moderation.

You do make a valid point about the fishes individual genes playing a role but you cannot prove it either, and when you factor in tank size and water quality well... they are more variables that also play a part so no one can say for sure either way.

As was said, lets have a decent disscussion and not be too gun ho about our individual ideas or suggestions.
Fish keeping is not a perfect science and there is more than one way to keep these fish.

I have not made any solid statements that I need to prove other than what I am in agreement w/ previous posters on that a varied diet is best. Ignorant posts like these is what my post was in response to.....

YOU NEED VARIETY! That will help alot, and ive heard some bad things about hikari! A rhom isnt supposed to just eat cereal his whole life!

What exactly have you heard that is bad about Hikari? Who did you hear it from? :screwy:

6 years and 5 or so inches or growth?

A FISH CAN BE TRAINED TO EAT W/E FOOD YOU BUY! IF HES HUNGRY HE WILL EAT, YOU JUST HAVE TO CUT HIM OFF OF PELLETS FOR AWHILE.

just my advice, anywho good luck with that ive given my advice in how ive succesfully dealt with similair matters, if anything buy different pellets with other nutrients in it! Or krill or something. P

People starve their fish to get them to eat the safe alternative with a good dietary content to possibly sick feeders as well as other diseased or questionable type of meat yet here it is suggested the other way around? Why? Because it is cooler? Because people THINK that it's better? Based on what?
If the OP's fish are just on pellets, will they not grow into healthy large fish? Will their lives in a glass cage not amount to another of the same species in another glass cage because of the lack of a specific type of food? So much so that the need for upper case typing is a must?

Have u kept piranha before?

No ones saying pellets are bad but look at piranhas in the wild! They need variety and imo they need raw fish and other meat sources, pellets are pellets, but variety is better imo. This op is wondering why his fish is growing very slow and im just giving advice, ive had piranha on pellets and on raw fish and in my experience raw fish seems to bring out more color and they seem more active but again i feed them everything including a handful of pellets a week!

Check my list to answer your 1st question and yes I feed MOSTLY Hikari cichlid gold pellets...

YOU actually did say that Hikari pellets are bad ..... read YOUR post again.

Raw fish to bring out color? In a silver fish? Many people will agree that coloration is improved by pellets not by raw meat, that's one of the things that they research and develop the pellets for.

You say look at piranha in the wild? Look at most fish kept in this site in the wild, they all eat live and yet my Motoro's have grown to have 26" discs on just Hikari pellets and majority of the rest are beastly w/ the majority of their diet being Hikari.

I said i heard bad things were in it! Didnt say they were bad and what piranha is silver? Im talking about my own experience with my own piranhas! I said from the get go pellets are better then feeders.

Imo i think a piranha should be fed variety and should have raw fish now and again for its sake! Any experienced P keeper will tell you VARIETY IS KEY! Maybe go to the piranha section and read some stickies!

Im done here, ive given my advice to the op and everyone else has agreed, sorry but im not playin your games.
