Where's the Line Between Grow-Out and Stunting?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do agree about the hormones part, but also, for arguments sake, if you put say a baby Aro in a 10G grow out and keep religious water changes and feeding it may not get stunted, but will get deformed...

Also, i think when breeders do it you know they keep up with water changes etc coz thats their lively hood, their "money"... Where as with regular keepers, we have work, life and everything else to deal with and can at times easily neglect water changes with busy schedules...

Well of course the arowana would get deformed, he'd be bigger than the tank...

stating he obvious.

Everyone has different situations which would require different approaches... not everyone or everything should be compiled into the masses.

keep in mind, some fish need exercise. if you have a free swimmer you really want more space for them to move around in. an ambush predator can healthily be kept in a smaller grow out than fish that would normally be cruising around a lake all day.

Fish release hormones into the water and as it builds up it tells the body to stop growing but the organs keep growing eventually killing it.

I learned this as well when I kept Discus. The sexually dominant ( not always the biggest) fish will release pheromones and hormones that will cause the other fish to stop growing. With Discus, frequent water changes are the key to growing them to their potential.

I think that different species have different tolerances of hormone levels. Most successful Discus breeders do daily water changes/drip system.
