I am trying to find out what people are using in their canister filters for media for the best results. I have (2) Rena xp4's and a fluval FX5 on multiple tanks. What media should I have in either? I house SA/CA cichlids in all the tanks. I also use aquaclear 110's with these. Thanks for the feedback.

Ceramic bio is good as well as api chem stars! Although expensive they are extremly pourus! Fluval cnodes are very good too but also pricey! Your need for bio depends on ur stock, more fish more bio filtration to counter act ammonia and waste, w/c are still very necessary!

Biorings and sponge is all you need. The only other thing besides those two that I would consider in my canisters would probably be Purigen.

I have read about purigen before. Isn't it true that you can recharge it with a bleach solution? Never used it but have heard it is a great carbon substitute.

The stock count is usually high on all three tanks. That's why I posted the question just to compare what others are doing. Thanks for the response.

i do the same thing. i use seachem matrix in my canisters but the purpose is the same. grow that bacteria on matrix, rings, sponges, pot scrubbies, whatever you can use and as much as possible.
