Whats wrong with dinosaur reconstruction?

This kind of just dawned on me, but Spinosaurus has jaws similar to those of a false gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii) which is a species of crocodile; amusingly enough, a search using the terms "false gharial bite force" turns up a discussion on the bite force of Spinosaurus as the first result.

Anyway, crocodiles have the strongest bite force out of any animal, so one could potentially extrapolate that to infer that Spinosaurus also had an extremely powerful bite, right?

I totally agree that is decent inference and one I had thought, but didn't say publicly on here. I appreciate you mentioning what you googled as I'm going to google that right now, and that's what this thread should really be about. Offering up info. and hopefully teaching someone something and you just did as I didn't know about the similarities between specifically Tomistoma and the Spino. I knew comparisons where made, but never knew the exact species it was compared to. So thanx on that one bro.

Wiggles do you happen to keep any herps?

I agree as well and can apprieciate this comparison

yes in a way. Its upper jaw teeth are extremly sharp. The jaw can open very wide to get the lower jaw out of the was. It hammered its head down into the meat and sliced through it. The neck was extremly powerful. It was very effective method.

it is very hard for me to type on the ipad and to post links. Here you have a link hat shows how allosaurus used his head like an axe. http://dsc.discovery.com/dinosaurs/allosaurus.html

"Buddy," maybe my English is not so good, but from the link, allosaurus did not use its head like an axe like the way you thought or described, "hammered its head down into mead and sliced through it." It more likes how python use its teeth, curve toward inside its mouth, to lock the pray in its mouth and let the lower jaw do the work of ripping and tearing...

Sorry koltsix. I type on my ipad. Its not so easy to type on that and i would prefer to type on a computer. I will answer your questions, when at home. :)

buddy, just to inform you i have a life and work. That is a forum for fun here. I tell you what i know and explain it for you. I won't write a 800 sites thesis down here nor will i write down all the scources where i got my informations. You either take it like i say it or let it be. deal? :) You can easily read into my thesis yourself if you want further informations. The axe hunting for example is described on various scientific publications.

And "buddy," if you have something to bring to the table, then bring it. Don't bring an ipad and use it as an excuse. You promised to answer questions, and just brushed him off with "i have a life and work."

Darius I'll accept your excuse that you stated in pm to me that english is your second language and that your intention wasn't to offend me. Though it wasn't exactly a real apology, I believe it's close enough and as good as I'm going to get from you.lol! So thank you for explaining that you didn't mean to offend me.

Back on topic I also inferred the same thing. That essentially they eat like all of us do. When you take a bite of an apple first you sink your upper teeth in and then use your bottom teeth in an upward motion to rend a piece of apple off the whole. This is a quote from your link by Jennifer Viegas "This allowed the hunter to hack, axe-like, into flesh with its upper teeth, while its lower teeth could then rip flesh from bone before the dinosaur immediately gulped it down" In my understanding just like us biting an apple the Allosaurus sunk it's upper teeth in then used it's bottom teeth to rend the flesh off the animal with an upward motion. Not as I believe you suggested earlier that they slammed their upper teeth down and then left leaving the animal to bleed to death. That's if my understanding is correct, does anyone else besides jlnguyen and I infer the same thing after reading the link Darius provided or do you guys interpret it differently? I'd like to hear anyone else's opinion.

Just watched the video link you put up Darius. It looks to me like a combination of what we're both saying to me. That they would slam their upper jaw down as you said like an axe, but adds what I said which is then used it's bottom teeth to rend the flesh off causing the animal to die from the blood loss associated with massive tissue damage from having chunks torn from the prey item. From the 2 links you provided I am starting to give more credence that your knowledgeable, but lack the articulation of the english language to articulate your points properly.
