How many polys in a 75 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
many people keep bichirs in large groups and they tend to pile. as long as many hiding places were provided i just don't see a reason they would be overly stressed if they do well in giant groups in bare bottom tanks

That is true. It's also true that lots of people keep bettas in tiny bowls, and goldfish in 5 gallon tanks. Fish will put up with what we give them because it's not like they have a choice in the matter. Just because they appear to put up with it...doesn't mean they are doing well. Those fish that all pile on top of each other are doing that because they are trying to hide. So they end up using each other for hide areas because the keeper is either ignorant or cruel, and doesn't want to downsize the population and have a properly set up tank.

Do you even pay attention to videos of these tanks overstocked with bichirs? Notice how agitated the animals are? Study the swim patterns and the behavior. These are not happy fish. You should treat fish just as you should treat a cat or a dog. Take care of their needs.

guess that makes sense never really gave it that much thought just figured there would be more negativity around it if it was that bad on em. most i ever had in my 75 was my del, a pair of sens and a young palmas polli. now its just my del and im lookin to order 2 more upper jaws, its not something i would do i just assumed as many people do it and don't get flamed it was considered fairly common practice/acceptable

Well a lot of times people are afraid to offer any criticism. You always stand the risk of someone blowing up in your face for speaking up on the behalf of the animals, or they don't realize it's a problem when there is one. That said it's understandable to fall into that trap of "Well others do it and no one throws a fit so it must be okay". The best thing you can do as a fish keeper is research your animals. Where do they come from? What is their natural habitat? How do they interact? Then you take that information and use it to make informed choices as you look at the information people give you about the animals. You take other people's experiences into account but you cannot forget their nature.

To the op,i would say if you wanted all of the ones on your list, look into a tank that has a wider foot print then a stander 75gl like 4x3x?
You will have a happier bunch of polys,
Good luck and what ever you do go with post some pics

Thanks, but I never wanted all of them. I just wanted to list the species that I was considering out of since if I just wrote "upper jaw species" or 12-14" bichirs, I feel as if there would of been confusion.

I don't want to have to upgrade the tank. So if I were to do
-2 ropes
-2 Sens
-and 2 of the (delhezi, palmas sp., or retropinnis)

That would be okay? Would I have room to add either 1 peacock eel (max size 12"), or 2 of zig zag/yellow tailed spiny eels? (max size 6-8") or would I need to take out one of the bichirs for everyone to have enough space?

To Sanguinefox: Can I kindly ask you, how many bichirs do you own or have in the past? Very curious. Thank you.

Could easily do 6 upper jaw species(excluding ornate and tuegelsi) in there, not familiar with rope fish tank requirements but I would assume your wanting of 2 rope 2 sen 2 of the others would be fine. Also a spiny eel may not be the best choice, get some top/mid dwellers.
