Shoaling dithers for my CA hundy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I usually like Buenos Ares tetras ... they are quick, kind of nasty, decent sized and their color pattern is very similiar to Mexican tetras (which are a pita to find in the hobby here).

But expect even the BA tetras or Colombian tetras to get picked off by those trimac's eventually.

Don't the cichlids you have grow to 10" to 12"? A little Rummynose or Harlequin will become lunch.

Some larger dither options:

1. Roseline Sharks- Puntius denisonii (I've never seen one larger than 6")
2. Arulius Barbs- Puntius arulius (4" avg adult size)
3. Filament Barbs- Puntius filamentosus (5" to 6" avg adult size)

Instead of considering fish that stay under 3" to 4" you should be looking at fish that grow to at least 4" if you want to keep them for life with those cichlids. If you are worried about space, you might need a bigger tank down the road.

So I ended up getting 12 Columbian Tetras. Within a few weeks, all are gone. Bon appetite. My Trimac is only 3".

Lesson learned.

I didn't see this thred until now. No tetra is going to survive long in that tank. With a male and female Trimac if they ever decide to breed they'll be the only fish left in that tank. A 100 gallon tank is too small in my opinion for a breeding pair of Trimacs the male will eventually kill the female in that tank. Put as many hiding places as you can for her that the male can't get into but the best thing would be to seperate them after they breed. The other option would be to get a seperator.

i agree that you should look for larger schoolers if it has any chance to work.is this a grow out tank? the trimacs will own it if/when they breed.or the male will just get 6 inches and take them all out.i had filament barbs with my trimac of 2 inches, good until he hit 5-6 inches

Here's an example of what you're dealing with in a few months:

Lol I was thinking of getting some crayfish and realized $30 is a bit much for a one time snack.

I'm quite partial to Bleeding Heart Tetras, fairly cheap and have a nice look to them. But I agree that larger bodied schoolers are the way to go.
