Ok well I have some young vieja Breidohri and I am positive they are spawning, but the weird thing is that they're only about 1.5inches :WHOA: maybe 2 inches for the male. Ive had the same thing jewel cichlids that were only about an inch and were laying eggs and breeding. So is this normal for Vieja Breidohri cichlids to be doing this at this size?

It can be very normal for viejas to breed at a young age, but f I were you I'd stop them breeding, they will waste their growth on effort for breeding and in effect it will stunt the growth of the breohdori just a warning it's happened to me too.

i dont think it will stunt their growth, i dont know what scientist ppl get that from..

But I had Breids breed at 5" b4.. Not 2". That's pretty insane. They are always bigger when you take them out the water to measure.

I also do think it is better to breed them later just by assuming they will make a stronger and more quality fish at a proper size rather than being so small and premature.. Im not a sperm expert so just my assumption.

nice. How about a video?

It really sin't rocket science...

Breeding takes a huge amount of energy especially on the females part. A young breeding pair is less likely to get as large and grow as fast as a non breeding cichlid because the non breeding cichlid can put all of its energy into growth and development.

I would recommend separating them until they get a little more size on them.

doesn't mean growth will be stunt. Prove it instead of guessing. That may be if you keep on breeding them every time they want to because like you said. But who does that? Too many fries

Im sure this isnt the only yound pair out there that breeds. If you feed them and give them room and time, they gonna grow.
I bred a small 5" male before then after he grew so fast and fought his father.
Show an old stunt fish due to breeding then.

As you can tell by comparing the pea gravel to the fish, mine bred fairly small the first time, 3" male smaller female. They did grow up nicely.

I never said they would be stunted and I never said they would most defiantly grow slower. I said they are LESS LIKELY which means that there is a better chance at optimal growth when they are not spawning. There are plenty of fish that have spawned and grow large and fast but that is isn't the general trend.

Congrats on the spawn. Mine spawned fairly small as well, but the first couple times weren't successful. It took a couple tries before they got it right and now, they're spawning quite frequently. I haven't noticed any slowing of their growth rate, but it depends on the individual fish.
