My thoughts on why a kid shouldn't build a monster tank (things to consider)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Monsters come in all shapes and sizes. In fish and in book/movies/folklore... Some say a red belly P is a monster... Some think a 6 ft cat is for the dinner table and would jump into the water with it in a second... My mom says my 8 inch oscar is a "monster fish" I laugh and say it wouldnt last with some of my others. Its all relative. Size and shape shouldnt be a matter... Garentee a black rhom would F UP my id shark... OR a jack dempsy would tear through my moms community tank and be called a monster... As for a young person getting into a large tank setup. If the parents are willing to have that in their house and let thier child care, learn and put it in the basement or garage.. Why not ? Im positive ALOT of us have picked up large tanks off craigslist or kijiji from people who got tired of such a large tank... I Know I got my 180 for DIRT cheap because someone got in over their head... So whats it to you if someone wants to try it ? Its a hobby, if they buy a big tank and sell it and lose money who cares ? Its their money. Atleast they wernt sticking huge fish in a 30 gal...

I have a "Monster" 180 gal tank. Because of my red tailed cat and my ID shark. I DONT plan on keeping them for life... The red tail im giving to my buddy (hes building a few thousand gal in his basement) and the ID I will sell or also give away. Whats going to happen to my monster tank is a few florida gars (all time fav fish, who LOOK like monsters with those teeth) or some really nice big aggressive cichlids, some oscars, jags ect.

My tank currently has a florida gar, a ID, red tail cat, Show oscar, jaguar cichlid, pleco...

I have to disagree, I have enjoyed keeping fish at the age of 7 , now I have most likely more tanks/water then some adults yet look after every tank daily and care to all the fish.

Not saying that the points are wrong but not all kids are like this, I work my ass off every day keeping up with school and my job then when I finally get home I have to tend to the fish been like this for 1 year and a half and I still do it everyday, I have been paying 30% of the bill every month also and my parents dont get me anything else its my birthday or mother finds a fish she likes. not once have I even considered letting go of all the fish due to the hard work it brings to much joy.

saying this, I think if kids really do want to go down this path they just have to realize theres a huge amount of work to handle and lots of money is required, its almost the same as working 2 jobs and going to school, if your not switched on 100% of the day one area will surfer and your body will be at the point of breaking the first few months. only negative side is some of your friends will think your crazy lol I get my fair share of this positive is my girlfriend enjoys fish also and is understanding.

you just have to be committed and really want and not just short term, think before you consider a large tank where you want to be in 10 years if you cant find caring for a massive tank/fish dont do it.

I only skimmed over the rationales about this issue and kid. not gonna address all the details. seems like that's been driven into the ground better than any good fence post.
LOL.
Just wanna say, I'd rather be up against this particular battle with a teenager than all the other crap that he could want to be doing. Things which could derail his life or kill him, and possibly others.
Good Lord. there's drugs & alcohol, car crashes, gang-banging, sex & early parenthood, worthless pursuits that kids waste years on and never learn a useable skill from. and we gotta whack on a boy for wanting to build something?
Even if he did it all too big and totally failed, he'd come away having learned a lot of different things, and some skills for later on.

The only thing I feel the right to push is, be up front with parents.
Other than that,...?

I'll reiterate my point earlier: kids should communicate with parents, don't gloss over details such as electric bills...Parents should do some reading on their own and properly evaluate the situation and the kid's ability...With proper homework, it could work...

Wow wow wow. I joined this site to get helpful information and it just seems like a lot of bashing. My biggest tank is a 125 so its not "monster" like everyone says, but it shouldn't matter what site you go on everyone should help each other out. This is a form to begin with use it that way. I'm no monster keeper but I love my tanks and put a lot of care, time and money into what I have. And as I go I educate "my kids" and teach them too. There has been a select few on here that would even give me the time of day and help me with my questions. Maybe its because I'm not a passionate monster keeper. And the whole thing with the kids is that if the parents allow what is going on and don't direct the kids in the right direction who's fault is it really? The parents need to get educated before the kids. Think about it. Your son comes to you and says dad/mom tommy down the street has a big fish tank. I want one too. Are you going to run out and get tommy what he wants without doing your homework?? Who's to blame in this whole discussion the parents or the kids??

Here's my question for this topic to all of you. What if my patents and I had researched a monster(600 gallon pond) and we decided to get it fully aware of all the prices. My parents agree to pay the bills and agree to take care of it because my dad is also good with aquariums. If it was a blue fiberglass pond so no leaking or anything. Would this be most likely frowned upon in this community or looked highly of or nobody really cares(neutral).
