My plan- gars in outdoor pond??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks.

Bigger is better with gars (besides babies, of course), so I would go as big as you can. Try to get a decent-sized footprint as well as a decent depth in order to keep the pond at a more stable temperature as well as provide a larger overall volume of water.

Kevin, would you agree that 12' x 6' x 4' (LxWxD) should work pretty well for a few average captive alligator gars? I would double-check on the depth, though, as you may need to go deeper in order to compensate for the colder winters.

Also, keep in mind that you're looking at sinking a decent chunk of money into this project, so be sure that you can swing it before starting; I doubt that your parents will be very pleased if you have to stop the project part of the way through and leave the yard torn up.

Ryan I wopuld agree that a 12' x 6' footprint would work pretty well for a group of captive raised gators. As far as the depth i personally wouldn't risk overwintering outside, unless going quite a bit bigger in pond size.

Agreed. It might work for overwintering if it is heated to a certain degree although it would be far cheaper in the long run to just make a larger & deeper pond.

again, given the information we have been provided with by the OP thus far, i don't think they are experienced enough nor do they have appropriate resources to take on a project of this scale with this species at this time. best thing for everyone (and every fish) involved is to revisit it later and get more experience with smaller gar species in different setups--

Of course. I'm more looking at it from a hypothetical perspective now in case someone should ask again in the future.

understandable...works for discussion among regulars in the forum, however, a "real" plan of this sort with the intention of benefit to others in the future would probably best be served by a separate dedicated threads, as opposed to one that started off as this one and ends with us knowing the OP (and original plan/resources) were not exactly ready for it.

i'd also encourage a different thread that way we could get some real info (which would gather attention of regulars and new folks alike) from those of you working with ponds and larger species. additionally, some of us others could likely contribute....of course, it's not like we all have time to set up such threads, haha - just speaking hypothetically as well!--
