I'm buying this tank but I have no experience with overflows and what-not. Can I build a pretty cheap sump with PVC pipes and a pump and an aquarium that sits underneath?

The overflow concept is quit simple. When the tank starts to overflow the water will be drained/gravity fed down to your sump, then through your filtration, then having a return pump to return the water back to the main tank. Also there are cheaper ways of building a sump ie using rubber maid bins, 5 gallon buckets, plastic drawer. Depending what kind of sump design your looking for.

Ok. Do you think I'm getting a good deal? He's selling it to me for $250.

That's a steal near me! Currently there are no 125's selling with a stand for less than $400. Good looking tank! Good luck! You can also buy a 55 gallon just for a sump. A 55 is one of the most common aquarium sizes and you can get one for very cheap. So you can probably get a 55 with accesories and use some of the accesories and sell the rest. Then use the 55 as a sump. Is there a spot under the tank for the sump? If not your better off buying a cheap wet dry filter that is custom sized and for a smaller tank and just cut out a spot for it. You should be able to find a full 55 setup for around $100 and that would be good for this sized tank. Or get a 75 just to be safe on water flow. Water flows down through a pipe and into the sump. Then it goes through media and through a pump back into the tank. The tank usually has pieces of glass breaking it into sections with individual media. It works like a waterfall through the tank and usually flows downward once it goes over the level of the glass. Then you can have a large opened area in the tank where you can put plants, fish, invertebrates and whatever you want. I would fill that thing up with about 300 snails and a bunch of crayfish and other fish. Good luck!
