How to heat a large tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How does the heater stay on and off with temp? Is it like an air conditioner? Like how it reaches that temp then shuts off? The rooms lowest temp is about 60 degrees.

Google "thermostat"

Mother of god...lol

This could be a LONG six months if he actually builds this tank.

Correct me if I am mistaken....

But...

All the electric aquarium heaters that I have in them contain a thermo stat. When the water reaches your required temperature the bimetallic strip inside flexes which breaks the electric connection and switches your heater off.... When your water cools the connection is remade so the heater turns on again....

Theoretically it does all the work and monitoring for you. :)

I thought it would be a thermostat. Sorry

I have a tank at 800 gallons, and in the winter months to help cycling, used two heaters one 1000W titanium heater and one a 500W titanium with a dual temp controller that keeps them at 78 degree. But once the tank was up and running, you may find that you will not need the heaters any longer. Like someone meniton earlier, once you start running all you pumps and lighting, you might be surprised how warm the tank will stay on its own. Since cycling my tank in the winter, I have not had to use my hearters, at all. They are not even plug in any longer.

Forget the 3-5W per gallon rule when talking Plywood tanks, especially with added insulated. Ply tanks hold the temp in much better than all glass tanks. My 800+Gallon tank will maintain temp easily with just the 1 x 300W heater and it is outside. I do have a 2nd heater in there for back up but it is set to a lower temp so it never comes on unless the 1st heater stops working and the tank temp drops. As Bderick said too, submersible pumps will help add a considerable amount of heat to the water as well.

Dude, you have a lot of research to do.. I have seen a lot of your posts and before you build and 800G tank you should research a lot on basic aquarium setup and equipment.. You tank temp also depends on what type of fish you plan on keeping..

Maybe you could get away with a couple 300 watt heaters. I remember seeing a thread where a guy heated his 1,700 gallon pond to 78 degrees with just 2 300 watt heaters.
