Budget bio filteration media. Please help!

it will i doubt it would be as good. have you look at k1 plastic media? idk if you get that in the states thought that seems cheap to me doubt the surface area on them will be as the scrubbies though
Where is the best place to get k1 I need enough to liquidize 12" x12"x10"
 
I don't want to throw a curve on you but did you think about using plastic hair curlers the ones with brisels inside. I've used them for years in my canister filters on my reef tank. No nitrates. you may have those in your area but might not be as cheap as scrubs

Hm. No nitrates is the work of something else. Inert pieces of plastic in an aerobic environment are not going to reduce nitrates. Just saying.
 
I used plastic sponges from the dollar store to make a wet-dry tower in my sump.
