If a dog respects you and that you are the boss it will not bite you. a puppy learns from its mom not to bite hard caz if it does it will get jacked up for it. Im dominate so my pups just carry that respect from their mom and it transfers to me.

+1

Now that I agree with. Its the same way with most animals. Doesn't mean they still won't mouth you though. Its all about the dog, the owner and the kind of training you incorporate. That's all I've been sayin lol

This has gone on for quite a while. Good points made.

Based on the logics presented here about dogs mouths being the equivalent of a humans hand, when aggressively playing, you've never accidentally hit anything? The scenario that sparked this all was a dog playing in the air that was being blown in its direction. I read it as playing and not an act of aggression as no mention of growls or barking

The full logic presented says that a, dog knows all the time where its mouth is and how hard or soft its biting and that not only is it against canine social structure but also human social structure for them to use their mouth on on pack leaders.
Yes in rough play I've bumped a play mate with my hand, but I've never broke anyones nose.

Growling and barking are the last two warning signs that a dog displays and they often aren't used at all by confident dogs. Case in point pick the lock on my front door and walk in, you won't hear anything but a huge dog running on a hard wood floor but you will get bit. my current dane and a american bulldog I owned 12 years ago almost never barked. My agitator/trainer explains the dog figures you ignored the first 6 warnings so why use the other 2 so tail wagging they charge in to bite you. A wagging trail does mean a dog is friendly it means they really want something that something could be you petting them or them tearing you up.

I get what you're saying but I'm referring to an isolated situation, not in general. The situation that sparked the whole convo. Granted, other stories were brought up in which the bites were completely intentional

Dogs are not perfectly tuned robots with complete body control, accidents do happen

If I was given a bite report that stated things as she described them. I would have put it as an unprovoked bite impounded that dog wrote her parents a ticket, and recommended they either completely retrain the dog with a behaviorist or euthanize it. that bite wasn't an accident imo.
