Swollen Ray, what is up?

I always thought water run through home water softeners is not usable for aquatics?

If you are trying to soften your water I would recommend a more proven method .theirs probably safe home softeners but their really ain't much info on them. And your unit probably doesnt remove chlorine?

Totally agree!

Not at all. I have been doing these large changes for years with no adverse effect. The difference in the water will be less DOCs, more Kh, higher pH, lower nitrate. Nothing bad there. Gh will be the same. If you have a substrate which affects your water chemistry, however, large water changes are a different prospect.
All my fish react positively to the water change.

Heretic, i agree 4ppm is ridic. Get on the horn for sure.

totally. i called my town's water treatment facility today and they basically called me a child with a toy, that i didn't know the ass end of water quality, yet have no clue that i test water for a living.

they tried to tell me the bio cycle and all like i've never heard of it before despite me telling them up front about noticing the high ammonia, no nitrites or nitrates in the tap, that i tested multiple areas of the city, and to verify my test kit wasn't faulty, testing on an RO tap (which was the only one to turn yellow). the rest look like i have liquid evergreen trees inside the vials.

they are coming out tomorrow morning to "prove me wrong".

if they continue to demean me and be douches, i'll be sending my findings along with a video of the tests, to the newspaper. not only is ammonia toxic, but the higher the pH, the more toxic it becomes. my city's water is between 18-26 grains per gallon of hardness, and as far as my high range pH test, it's higher than the scale goes.

that's some TOXIC ammonia.

has anyone tried ozone to fix this issue? i just had a male ray that has been in the store for months start having issues around the hip area where there was a large bubble and could not keep the rear end down. checked the o3 and it was a little lower then i normally run it. once it was turn to the normal location that it is set at the ray is 100% better and has no bubble and can now sit at the bottom with no issues
