I had a pair and the male was getting huge at least for the size of them and then all of a sudden the male died. I was totally bummed and still don't understand what happened. Now I just have a female but have been keeping my eyes open for a mate for her. I loved seeing them swim around the tank together and will definetly house a pair again. Mine isn't the variant that Rapps currently has. Oh, and I love your pics and your collection is awesome.

I have two c. notopthalmus and they are beautiful fish, very graceful and always changing colors. However, I kind of hate them now because they are so damned aggressive. When I bought them, I thought I had a male and a female because only one of them had an eye spot, not that it would have worked anyway in my tank because it's not big enough.

The obvious female constantly attacked the other one, and eventually an eye spot began to show up on the one I thought was male. When I got my second tank, I separated them, and now they just harrass my other fish. For some reason the female with the stronger eye spots, which is now in my bigger tank, throws an absolute fit every time she sees my young senegal bichir. She gets these crazy dark vertical stripes, flashes her fins (now she has two eye spots), flares her gills, arches her body, and then eventually lunges at my bichir. Not cool! Might be getting rid of them soon because they totally screw up my otherwise congenial communities, and my bichir (and young festivum in the other tank) take priority.

They seem to like my hoplo catfish though. They seem to follow zoidberg (my hoplo) around when he's rooting in the sand, eating whatever food he kicks up. Might be something they do in the wild.
