Hello; Was the car parked on a hill? Which habit do you have- Use the parking brake each time you park the car or never use the parking brake?

Hello; have you read and followed thru with spadoc79's link on the mazda 626? This addresses the connection between the shilt lever and the transmission.
Many with automatic transmissions get in the habit of not using the parking brake and only placing the vehicle in park. This relies on a mechanism in the transmission to hold the car. I am not sure about the mazda, but many of these transmissions have a type of pin/pins that slide into a hole and hold the vehicle. This puts a lot of pressure on those pins if the parking brake is not used. I have had to tug quite hard to take an automatic out of park on some vehicles. Parked on an incline increases this pressure. While many get away with only using the transmission, I like to apply the parking brake even on my pickup with an automatic transmission. I like to come to a complete stop and hold the brake pedal down while putting the transmission in park. I also like to apply the parking brake before taking my foot off the brake pedal, in particular on hills or inclines. This also keeps the parke brake mechanism freed up.
There is also an interlock on a lot of newer vehicles between the brake pedal and the shift lever. This is why you must press the brake pedal in order to take the shift out of park. If that interlock is damaged or out of adjustment it may prevent the shift lever from moving out of park.
