.22lr is the best for zombies/shtf IMHO. Easy and cheap to stock pile. Various power lvls and subsequent noice. Everything from CB shorts(sounds suppressed) to CCI stingers(frags violently) or better yet velocitor(out of a rifle, 11" penetration and 40 cal expansion). Heck standard velocity round nose lead will penetrate very deep. Think well over 12". If a shtf situation they can be used to kill really almost any game in the US. And for 50 bucks you can have a stockpile of 1500 or more rounds.
Add in a good bolt rifle and ur good to go. Mine devours federal lighting like no tomorrow. Cci stingers are another favoritle. No remingtom for ranges past 25yds though. But my HP22 luvs those remingtons.
