Festae- Quality VS Trash!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have sold a good amount of festae fry from my old pair a couple years ago and when I sold them they were 1/2" up to 4" and I didn't see any deformities in them. Over the last couple years, a few members that have purchased some, whether from me or thru someone else. A couple of them have told me they saw some deformities as they grew out. I even sold a group from my personal keepers that were 3-5" and I know for a fact that those were completely healthy. Well I bought back a male from that group later down the road and when I placed it in my tank, I immediately noticed he didn't look right... Almost stunted, and swam funny. Almost like it was injured previously and healed partially.. so what I'm getting at is, when selling fry there is always a possibility for some deformed fry to POP up later down the road. Also, I believe there is a possibility that some of the deformities were created after the fish were purchased. Which I think is Mainly due to poor fish keeping, over fed, poor water quality, etc. That theory is the only one I can think of to explain the larger ones I sold to buy one back later that turned out abnormal... Any thoughts to this?

Here is my thought and it might be way off the mark, but the start of my augment is based in a field I am familiar with and then moves towards a grayer area. As a society that tries to save every baby born at all costs, look at the incidence of disability within our species, it is rather high as disabilities come in all shapes and forms, some can be seen clearly but most cannot, and even more are not diagnosed till much later in life. In nature a lot of this gets worked out with the whole “survival of the fittest” argument, but our tanks, a lot of fry get a chance at life that they never would in the wild. So because such a large percentage of fry survive, we are bound to see some that are less than perfect. It would be best for the breeders to grow the fish out to a much larger size to insure the fish are high quality, but the problem with that is, many of us would rather buy them while they are smaller and cheaper. I would rather take my chance on ten fish I get to grow out then one 6inch winner.

I can agree that i too believe that a higher percentage make it in the hobby versus in the wild. which would increase the chances of raising deformed festae. And there are alot of people who would rather buy them while smaller, cheaper, and easier to ship. which again increases the chances of deformities, but also take into consideration that if the keepers dont take proper care of them, they can develop deformities.

My local fish store just got in "wild" 1" ecuador festae. Hmm...
