Festae- Quality VS Trash!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lots of things in this world are illegal, that doesn't mean that they don't take place on a regular basis. Show me a large enough profit, and I'll show you a thriving business. :)

Jason ........I found that link, it doesn't break things down at all. I'm looking for a direct reference to the ban of exporting "live fish" from Ecuador. I'm not doubting that there is one in place, but I would prefer to read the actual regulations with regards to live fish. Until then, I can only assume that no such ban exists, at least one that includes ALL fish under ALL situations.

If there is a ban in place, then perhaps Dan can explain how it is that he has a constant source of 1 inch "wild caught" fry available?

The ban is in Ecuador, Dan has explained that his stock descends from Peru

Sorry, but you have completely lost me. What commercial farmers do you speak of? Who exactly is raising festae in "ponds", other than possibly those who export fish from Ecuador, in which case you will never know whether your fish are F0, or F?, unless you travel to Ecuador & collect them yourself.

RD, if there was no ban on exporting Festae in Ecuador then surely Rapps, Conkel, Fear, and other top importers would be selling them like they use to in order to meet the demand in the hobby. If you want to split atoms and see the regulations with your naked eyes then contact the Ecuadorian Wildlife Conservatory. Many exotic animals in Ecuador have been exploited for profit and the ban was instituted to protect them. You can start here:

Whew.

i just finally read this entire thread.

ive enjoyed everyone's own opinion even though some can get a bit fiesty, thats the kind of thing that get people talking and learning for that matter. Bomillyiam has PMd me long ago to get me strait on some of my mislabeling and i appriciate the input. Every fish i own is special to me in some way, ive even kept fish BECAUSE they were deformed or strange. Festae are very special fish to all of us who keep them, and out of the few i have each of them has something unique about him/her. Body shape, coloring, profile, attitude ect. thats what makes this species attractive to me.

you all have nice looking fish, and ive learned alot in this thread- mission accomplished!

I cant agree with that. sounds like you just isolated yourself to only two peoples opinions. Try getting facts because theres no proof of that. Dont get me wrong, sounds good, but like I say facts. Assumptions cause confussions.

Hmmm.... LOL well I cant agree with you, Mr. 4 posts...I have talked to alot more than just 2 people about my facts. And those two people IMO know more about Festae than everyone combined that ive talked to or researched... I dunno, your either way too new to this forum to be making any judgement calls.. Or your a troll!!

You are right Jason, someone with 4 posts can't possibly be correct just as someone who lives in Alaska where it is dark 18 hours a day for 8 months out of the year can't possibly be the worlds foremost authority on festae.

By the way, I have 4 posts also so that must make me have a lack of knowledge as well.

Ahhhh yes. This looks like the perfect spot to point out my signature

Ok interesting thread.

Will share my recent experience and 2 cents, Last summer obtained 24 Festae fry from a reputable importer I have done biz with before. My goal get a pair for display. Parents wild and assumed not related as they were imported as juveniles, off spring then via this pair. Hence F0 but breed in states. Now at 9 months only 8 left and the size disparity is staggering, The largest is 3X the size of the smallest and looks to be female, I think. This is nature, is typical- the strong will survive.

The point I am trying to make is that as close to wild I could get with good genes, health, properly cared for and STILL vast differences. But this is typical I think one of the factors contributing to " poor quality" is the salvaging of as many fry as possible.
