Even though the fish have plenty of room and hiding places, they cramp themselves underneath one stump. Everything except my pleco chills out here. Even the fish that don't particularly like each other. I was thinking they crowd there because this is where I put the food. Any way I can get them to go back to hiding throughout the tank. Is it bad that they all crowd there? There has not been any physical damage, just a lot of gill flaring between my payara and JD.

Fish will do what's comfortable and it may be that the current isnt as strong in that particular spot so they rest together. You could always try moving things around but i find that not messing with the tank everyday helps keep the fish social and non skiddish! Its not a bad thing if they all chill just remember weekly wc!

All my fish stay to one side mostly because my alpha male who breeds allot stays towards the other side of the tank. Fish do like cover.

The current being stronger in an area would be my guess too. It'd explain why the pleco is off on his own, he just grabs onto stuff and probably isn't bothered by the current as a result.

A whole tankful of my fish do that when they see something they aren't used to at the other end, outside the tank. LOL.
If I put something next to one end, all my fish stay huddled at the other side.
maybe bcuz they can investigate things inside, but can't outside?
They're more scared of changes out, than in. I put an empty chair there & they stay away. If I sit in it they come out.
same with other things I tried.
not all my tanks, only one. fish are all different & I guess some develop kind of a 'community' mind-set.
weird.

Bingo.

People forget to notice that fish in a current is like a human jogging continously, when they rest they naturally migrate to a part of the tank where the current is less, its ALWAYS advised to have atleast ONE dead spot in ur tank or u could stress the fish to death with rapid currents!

And yes as stated when they freak they will huddle for safety but obviously you would have put 2 & 2 together and realized so I assume your fish are resting!

Just be sure to keep up on tank maintanence w/ weekly wc and bi monthly vacing, you will likely encounter way less problems by keeping ur water non toxic!
