Chinatown in NYC has a lot of great little shops. Just get near Mott Street. And start walking around.

And Pacific Aquarium on Delancey street is like half way between one of those spots and an Americanized lfs. I go to them for most of the stuff I need and they've always treated me well, although they rarely have anything too unusual there, fish-wise. They usually have a few big pieces of wood around the store as well.
