Glad that you said that. For one, I don't think keeping an arowana in a tank SHOULD be common practice. If you want to house it there for the first year or two thats fine, but unless you have a 10x5 tank then it's just not going to work. I do not understand everyone saying 8x3x2 is standard for silver arowanas. We're dealing with a fish that can and WILL reach 3 feet in the aquarium, possibly 4 feet in a pond. So no, keeping an arowana in tanks shouldn't be common practice; keeping them in pond should.

having said that just how many aros have you raised? you seem so well versed in them that it must be in the hundreds. if you have raised any you would have a different outlook on things instead of repeating info you read before. just stop your making a fool out of yourself.

Sorry but I am very sick of hearing the "could" word in any kind of animal care. Yes, you COULD keep a 3 foot aro in a 8x3x2. Will it live? Possibly. Will it thrive? Never. It will have no barbels from trying to turn around and a severe lip callus.

How many aro's have I raised? Let me say this; just the same as "I don't care about your post count", I don't care in the least bits about how many aro's you've raised. It doesn't mean your an expert; it doesn't prove to me your not feeding them 100% silversides, with every-few-month water-changes and letting them live in over-crowded tanks. And anyone who has raised hundreds of aros, (unless they're either an Asian fish farmer or a millionaire with the facilities to care for that many aros) to me means that they probably take care of them very poorly. That would mean to me that their aro's keep dieng and they keep getting new ones. And ahem, repeating something I've read before? Where'd you learn math, buddy? How many people in the thread have posted something about something they heard from someone else? Hm one, two, three....I rest my case. And making a fool out of myself; says the middle-aged man having an angry argument with someone over the internet...

It's so funny how I had three people team up on me the second I posted about ponds instead of tanks. I can only guess this is because everyone was trying to convince themselves that was unnecessary..

gandalf you have no idea what your saying. you cant talk about what you dont know. a 24" aro in a 180gal isnt crowded. i sell them at that point until i have my pond. raising aros is how you know what is acceptable and what is just bs you are spitting bs. notice how everyone did come after you was because we have exp in the topic unlike you. raising aros with a higher growth rates is bad fishkeeping and i dont know the first thing of aros.

Ah so your the kind of person who just keeps buying animals to sell them when they can no longer care for them? That's responsible. Just like redbelly said, if your fish can't TURN AROUND without rubbing the glass, that's pathetically inadequate. whoa i left the forum for couple days and here it is the result. welcome to my word in MFK gandalf, these people likes to gank on you and i have more than what you have right but im happy with that and dont give a damn..i see them as my regulars
people who thinks DE cause by head trauma.. because of hitting the top tank or sidewall..let me kick in common sense to you all.
let say how big of tank you keep the arowana in? whatever your answer is not going to be enough to trigger DE by head injury. your tank is just way too small and dont have the velocity to trigger head trauma the math is just not there and re-read my post about it couple pages back since i made a great effort in explaining it LOL
have you dissect your arowana? i did all 2 of mine.
what i got from the eyes socket? fat..yes you read it right fat from those dropped eyes, i psychically took the eyes off carefully with exact knife.
those wild arowana they sold you at your LFS is just a BS they sell you..just like "rainbow, blue, blueberry,strawberry and all that crap naming..and i bought a "wild" arowana yes im a sucker LOL
if i were to believe and pick one of the said list..lightning would be up there first than the "mechanical injury" and does makes more sense than head trauma.
in order to have DE caused by head trauma you you will have some evidence comes with the head trauma such as broken jaw, missing skin/scale on heads part first since DE is the aftermath of it. there is nothing holding the eyes except muscle, skin and nerve..didnt i say muscle can turn into fat?
they simply avoid very bright lightning on top of their head..hence automatically lower it eyes.
look at those football players, heavy weight lifting and take those activity from them atleast 6 months and see their muscle..the chance is you will see fat instead of muscle LOL
there is no point in arguing, your argument is just as good as the guy before or after you
and i will just laugh it off when people use their "experience" in taking care of aros..how much experience you really have..while all you got to do is WC, power feed them follow and listen the exact "advice"repeat the cycle..that kinda experience is just as good as someone with 5G tank filled with goldfish and filters and flakes food.
99.99% of aro keepers here dont do the justice to have their experience talks and that .01% barely ever post that i know since i join the forum..have you wondered why LOL
that is why we have alot of "mocking birds" in this sub-forum.

Precisely what i was saying. If a few inches is enough to gather enough force to hurt there eyes, then falling four feet back to the waters surface would DEFINITELY hurt them.

Keeping them in a small tank would inhibit their ability to move too much or pick up enough speed to cause damage upon themselves... if the trauma thing holds any truth.

you are from singapore?
i wondered if you know whats common practice in some part of southeast asia in raising aro, lightning is big part of it.
i never put lightning under the aro..it might if the eyes muscle not permanently damaged
some aquarium lights rated brighter than sun, and put that more bright than sunlight within 3 feet of eyes..damage will be done depends on how long it got exposed.

yea, I know how aros are tanned in Asia. And if the theory goes that bright light automatically causes DE, then almost all Asian Arowana would have developed DE. More so with "Champion" Arowanas, because I'm very sure they were tanned to the max. While the lights may cause damage, I seriously doubt DE is the byproduct of shining the light within 3 feet of the Aro.

I believe in the fatty tissues developing over time. But something must have caused it to develop...and no not from bright aquarium lights, doubtfully from banging the tanks either.
