My New Gar! What am I ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Solomon - I know you're the gar guru here - but I'm not kidding when I say the snout is about half the length of a normal FL gar's. If you look at the first photo, the nose is just as long as the head itself. That is not a photo-distortion.
I'm not trying to make it out to be something it's not - but something isn't quite right for Florida.
Could it be a FL / Shortnose hybrid ? Also, could you teach me how you can tell it's not a Shortnose?
I still say it is normal for FLG to have a snout like that! and are those spots not enough to say it is not a shortnose?

Thanks for the great info, guys - I learned a lot. This one definitely will be interesting to watch as it develops further. Hung - that's a beautiful fish!
So, my search for a shortnose (and spotted) continues...
As for the guy who said "skinny" - I'm trying to get him off of krill, so I let him go hungry between trying pellets again, and then giving him some more krill.
You guys are great!

TY, I think I'm lucky that my gar take pellet right way but getting him to eat other things is a bit of a problem now!

Girl ;) and try soaking the pellets in frozen krill juice to get the scent on them. worked great for my guys.

This is in the family of Alligator Gar.

Alligator Gar has 3 different type so far.

They are called
Common Gar,
Spotted Gar,
and the one you have, its called a Crocodile Gar.

The Croc Gar is the one that I am looking for here in California. Where did you buy this one at ?

Also, for these 3 types.. they have variations of long nose or short nose..

for example,
long nose common gar,
short nose common gar,
long nose spotted gar,
short nose spotted gar,
long nose croc gar,
short nose croc gar.

the Croc gar has a wider jaw and a blackish body. From what it looked it, your Gar is it.

Monster - how the heck can you say girl ? I don't think they can be sexed at all until they get about 1 1/2 feet, and the girls start fattening up?
Great idea on soaking the pellets - Wiggles - FD Krill, which is easy enough - it's just a matter of time.
Thanks!

All true gars are illegal in California, and your information is far from being correct.
