Oscar: Baby or Adult?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im excited for my first big tank too! Currently on the lookout for a good deal, but all I can find is jacked up prices for saltwater tanks and 4 foot long 120's when I need a 6 foot long tank.

Your probably right about the jd problem. I'd also be worried bout the clown loaches if they aren't big enough.

Yeah, That's why I'm getting some adult clowns.

Definitely get a very small Oscar and grow him up along side the JD, that would give you the best chance at the oscar not eating the JD when the oscar hits about 10" in 9 months and the JD is still at 5-6".

I like growing them out for the main reason of health. If you raise them from young, you get a bill of health in there as well. Some adults might not have been cared for.

The only positive to that if you already have big Oscars or other big bully fish in the tank but I would get them young they grow fast

Agreed. And oscars grow so fast that your tank won't be empty-looking for long. Plus, when it's HUGE, you get to look back and remember when it was the size of a quarter.

Thanks man, Yes, I guess it's only a year before they get Giant, I'll probably go with the baby O's, The only 2 reasons I wanted an adult was A: I wanted something big and B: I wanted to feed the adults some treats like some cooked prawns, Feeder fish etc... At what inch could I start feeding the O's stuff like small feeders and cooked prawns?

You will love the baby oscars. Hand feeding is great!
And they grow so quick.

Spike

Thanks man, I remember when I had 2 baby Oscars in a 20g (Yes, Now I know that 2 baby oscars in a 20g is a bad idea) Nearly 2 years ago when I first started fish keeping I use to hand feed them and all, It was great fun. What size inch would you say I could feed them stuff like Cooked prawns, Tiny feeders and garden worms at?

I started feeding mine chopped pieces of red wiggler at about 2 1/2 - 3". Less than a year ago,
And now they are 10 - 14". Since then they have graduated from wigglers, To superworms,
To night crawlers, To feeders. And pellets in between.
