Easiest way to tell when they are starting to fade is the whole body darkens and you start seeing splotchy cream colors forming.

If it starts darkening up all over, that's a good sign of it fading.

They get darker overall, and start "peeling" off.

Notice how the fish is black in some areas. Then when it fades, there's still some black left over.
