I'm suddenly (For some reason) having some drawbacks about the idea of keeping Oscars. I LOVE the fact that they have great personalities and all, The way they come to the front of the tank every time they see you, The way you can feed them nearly anything, They're beautiful fish but the guys at my LFS were saying to NOT GET OSCARS! That they get boring, They ruin your tank, They make a mess. If they breed they kill everything. I was at one stage thinking of getting a community setup with some tetras, Some angels, a ram, some loaches or pictus' but I'm wondering right now to myself would It be even worth it by getting an all mighty 120g just for a community with small fish? Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Anyone have any thing that they could tell me that would 'Excite' me about the idea of getting O's? I don't know why I'm like this all of a sudden, O's have to be one of my favorite fish yet I'm still having drawbacks. Anyone? Thanks

Depends, would you rather have a tank where fish will act natural and you get a chance to mimic a natural habitat. Or would you rather have a fish or two that just kind of stare at you, begging. Also remember, you can make a much nicer aqua scape with smaller fish that arnt constantly moving stuff around. Here's a pic of my community tank.

Thanks man but I'm still not too sure... I WOULD try my desired list (O's, Jack, Loaches, Pleco) and see how every thing turns out and If I'm not happy I could try get rid of them but loaches over here are around 45 Euro and their will be 4 of them? I don't know, Maybe I could try and sell? But who's going to buy 4 loaches (If I could try for 35 Euro) in this economy. I see what others have to say with making a decision. Thanks

In my experience with oscars they never took issue with my loaches. I have kept a lot of agressive cichlids and never had one that ate my clown loaches. I agree that they are messy and can foul a tank very quickly when they get some size to them. It really boils down to what you really want, it's your tank and you should do what makes you happy.

Thanks, I'm just trying to get some people to help me out with this

I have 4 Oscars right now, love them which is why I still have them haha. They do make a terrible messy and water changes all the time. I'm at the point where I'm thinking about going a different way for livestock.

You can take my Oscar when you pry him from my cold, dead fingers.

+1, About 10 years ago I had 2 when I was living in delaware... I could'nt take them with me when I moved to CT... I cried for a week. I am now in the process of setting up a 180g just to house 2 O's. God I love those fish.

I have 4 of them, And they are not going anywhere soon.
A Lemon, A Longfin Tiger, And Two Longfinned Albinos. :D
And as far as messy, No more than any other large fish.
When you keep a tank, Water changes are a must anyways.:(

Spike:grinno:

They are cool fish, big ol guys. I have one and he got me into lg fish keeping but there are so many other large fish with so much better colors and personality. My dovii and my red Texas interact far more than my Oscar does.
