I'm having my drawbacks with the idea of keeping Oscars :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Messiest fish I have ever owned and those were 5-7inches... Can't imagine what they are like when max... I have aro and other fish bigger than them and much less messy !
Why not think about bass ? Or other monster fish?

Why all the negative on Oscars? Oscars are sweet and I personally love the way they look over other fish like dovii .. there not messy if you have the proper filtration which you should have no matter what the fish or setup. To the OP I understand your split decision on a community tank vs big fish .. I went big fish instead of community DESPITE my dream tank being a huge community tank where everything just coexist and have there little lives ... Oscars are fun and just sweet fish, use a sand substrate for even easier tank cleaning for the week (poop doesn't settle in between the rocks) and also feed good food and don't over feed them I prefer hand feeding or just slow feeding as in don't just take a hand full of food and chuck it in so you can watch jaws go to town .. Happy Oscar keeping!

If you're not sure...dont buy any fish yet. Give it some time, set up your tank fishless and wait until this funk on oscars passes, or you decide they're not the fish for you. What else are you looking forward to with the fishtank? Plants, no plants? What type of setup? Does this work well for oscars or for multiple smaller species?

personally, I love the look and personality of oscars, yet I dont own any because I prefer more fish in a tank. I also enjoy heavily planted aquariums.

In a community tank you'll have several tiny fish that you can watch interact and they will somewhat ignore you since a lot of them (I think this is why) can't really see that far outside the tank. These fish will have shorter life spans but you can make it look super nice without all the decorations getting moved around.

An oscar tank would be a few fish that can live 10+ years, you'd have to do more water changes and your aquascaping would get moved around. But these fish would pay attention to you outside the glass.

The setup will be 4 Clowns, a Gold nugget pleco and a Jack, I'm thinking of getting a breeding pair of convicts instead of O's.

Convicts are nasty when breeding and also we oscar lovers can tell your not an oscar lover if you choose a convict over an oscar! Haha

So... The convicts are a big NO NO? Will they still resume to have aggression even after I take them from there fry?

*EDIT*

I also just read that they breed around every month? Will they attack my other fish?

Convicts will stand up to full grown Oscars when breeding. I honestly don't see Oscars breeding an issue, they take a long ass time to mature and you might end up with the same sex. When they are young they are very awesome to keep. They kinda mellow out when they get older but still keep that dog like personality. Oscar are kinda boring though.

No matter what any one says I'd not go breeding convicts with loaches your cons may hurt them when breeding

I'm not getting the Cons and the O's both. So The convicts won't attack any of the pleco, jack or loaches? Do they have a good personality as a fish? Kind of 'dog like' like the O's?
