750 gallons of cloudy water - why??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a similar problem and I tried everything. In the end I used a flocculant agent and the finest filter wool. I had to change the wool every 3 hours for the first day and the day after it was clear. I am not really a huge fan of chemicals, but it really worked well. I know API does accuclear which is reasonably inexpensive and would treat such a large volume.

what is a "flocculant agent"

I'm going to get a filter sock set up this weekend

It binds all the smaller particles within the water together, so that they become larger and are easier removed by the filter.

Seriously, I 100% guarantee your water will be crystal clear, there is a chance it may return, so you may have to perform the method twice (I did), but onces the tank settles and is established it will stay clear :).

Firstly, nice tank.

Ok now the problem.
How can you not wash your substrates especially sand. Lesson learn for the rest of us.

The practical method is to stir the sand just before large water change. Hopefully by the 10th-15th WC, it will clear up.

IMO it's really not practical to add more mechanical filters which you do not need. Just WC. Be patience give it some more time. Don't pay more for the mistake you have already made.

So despite the length of time you still think it could be the sand? I've still got the drip on 100% turnover a day so it's being water changed all the time.

Should i do large manual water changes and see if that has any affect?

Grant - where can i get one of these agents and what is it called?

There is many different brands. I have used a Seachem one, tetra and API.

I have found API accuclear to be the least costly and most effective. I got mine from pets at home (I gather your from the UK? If so where abouts?). Otherwise the lfs should stock something.

I know its smaller but my 135g was cloudy for weeks/months. I tried w/c's even upto 30-50% per day, and it would still be cloudy. After using this method twice my water is crystal clear.

Another tip, go to ASDA or such and buy some bed pillows, use the material inside, much cheaper than filter media just pour boiling water through it first.

:)

Flocculation agents are used all the time in the water/waste water industry. I worked in a drinking water plant where we used alum(the same stuff used to make pickles), anionic and cationic polymers, the same flocculents are used in waste water where it is sometimes referred to as snot. One needs to be careful with the dosage if fish are present, as flocculents can clog gill membranes.
As stated above flocculation is like rolling bubble gum or snot in dirt, but this is in water, it picks up the dirt and allows the larger pieces to be vacuumed up. Sometimes the particles in your water are too small and light to be filtered, flocculation even grabs bacteria and binds it to the particles and allows you to remove it.
