Hey all I was in my LFS and saw a really nice Motoro labelled as a Marble but Im not sure what to look for when they're young. If you gurus out there could spare some advice I'd be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance.

Look for faint marbling between the spots. Sometimes that shows at birth other times it doesn't. Also the perimeter spotting should be a lot more intense on marbles. Can you take a pic?

Thanks for the quick response, i'll try to get one later. I doubt this one is because i don't remember any marbling between but ya never know.

Marbles look very "marbled" as pups and motoros look like normal motoros they are very different. Just look at pics on the forum of regular motoros and then marbles, the difference in rays of an age you should be buying at will be exactly the same. Also ask to see them feed! If you dont see it or there are excuses then steer clear.

Wild caught or captive bred should be asked and if wild caught then pay a deposit and ask them to hold for a few weeks.

If you have to ask and at a price like that I'd venture to guess it's a motoro with some blushing between the dots. IF it is a Marble and you have to ask if it is it's likely a low grade Marble at best.

Most Marbles are pretty obvious even if only a week or 2 old, but nicer ones are obvious at birth.

you would be best getting a photo of the ray and posting it on here for opinions. i know that VERY young marbles dont have much marbling but i doubt that shops would be selling these. the marbling is the dark lines between the spots. there are lots of variations of marbles but i would expect to see at least some "marbeling" in a pup if i was going to buy it. even if it was faint ( as it will develop ) .

best way to be sure is get a pic and post it on here. the shop shouldnt mind as long as you ask them first and dont use your flash. :) if they refuse then thats up to them but it doesnt say much for the shop imo .

Hey everyone thanks for the great responses, work got a little hectic these past few days. Haven't been on MFK. I looked around and it's def not a marble, nice motoro though..tons of spots. However, I want a quality marble so i'll have to wait. given i'm building my plywood 450 i may wait but if the right fish at the right size shows up i may bite.
