More light and ferts arent out of the question, but I was gonna work on keeping what I start with alive at first.

Glass cats will school so will tiger barbs and they are pretty hardy. You can get clown loaches for bottom feeders (I've read they school up together and get along well with barbs.) good luck!

Look into kuhli loaches .... they're cool to see swim out of cover in planted tanks ... and neon tetras look awesome.
