I bought this little fella at a LFS here in New Jersey. He was sold to me as a Rio San Juan Barred Midas. Any ideas on sex? The body and head shape make me think female but I guess it is early for a hump to begin to develop. I will try and get some better shots. This fish is growing like a weed on NLS and Kens Krill Pellets

Short of venting it's near impossible to sex citrinellum with 100% accuracy, at any size.

The only time this is sometimes possible by visually viewing a fish, is when they are juveniles, and in a group, in which case the larger & more dominant specimens will typically turn out to be males. An interesting read on this subject;

I would think its a little young to visually sex and even then theres plenty of room for error. I would suggest you vent it.

True, I will try and get a good pic of the vent area.

Cichlid sex is determined by their size in relation to the rest of the group!! That is fascinating and I never knew that. Thanks very much for posting.
