Garter Snake Problem

^what joe jaskot said. Just grab them as you see them and relocate them "over the hill" assuming you're in the country, otherwise a short drive may be in order. If you're worried about biting some garden gloves will do. Just make sure you know for sure they're garters. Just a heads up, I have some slate behind my garage and ringnecks always go under it. I usually flip 6 slates, and have 6+ ringnecks, and when I move them new ones move in within a few days so it may be a losing battle. You might just have to learn to live with them, they're good to have around. Try to snag some pictures if you can, it'd be pretty cool to see them. - N

No joking I've always wanted to fly a red tail. I'm pretty sure I could pass the written test but it's one of those things where you can't have a 9-5 and do it right. Maybe one day. How b.a would that be...

....which kind of has me wondering now if any falconers are apart of this forum..? - N

Not worried about being bit or musked on, they are fast and don't go too far from their "den" so as soon as they see me they flee

Yeah, they will only musk you if you pick them up. I just had to warn you - every time my son sees a Garter Snake he wants me to pick it up, and then my hands stink for a few hours.

I used to own a blue garter snake and after awhile of handling it stopped musking.

My checkered garter will only musk if I catch him with dry hands. If my hands are wet he's fine. He's a funky little snake. The trap is simple. Just cut a circle in the side of the Rubbermaid and put the funnel in point first then either hot glue or silicone it in place

What part of Colorado do you live in? I live in Highlands Ranch which is by Littleton, anyways I always have garters in my yard. All I do lift up all large stones/rocks in my yard and catch as many as I can then I let them go in Local park. I dont like garters, I would rather have gopher snakes in my yard instead because I know their large enough to eat most birds/rodents.

I don't think you have to worry too much about diseases. Just make sure you don't have any open cuts on your hands and you're good.
